SUMMARY:The Light In Between
DESCRIPTION:The Light In Between emerges in a world of continual rupture. Not as escape\, and not as resolve\, but as the brief and necessary moments that allow us to remain. This season\, Dayton Dance Initiative invites artists and audiences into works shaped by partial illumination — moments that flicker\, hold\, and pass between us. Through shared attention\, embodied inquiry\, and collaborative process\, these new choreographic works ask how we stay in relation — how we notice\, together\, the spaces between impact and breath. This season also opens a new threshold for Dayton Dance Initiative: our first-ever choreographic commission\, extending beyond Dayton to support the work of David Morse. Rooted in trust\, time\, and exchange\, this commission reflects our belief that connection — like light — travels\, arrives\, and reshapes the space it enters. What we practice here does not end in this space; it returns with us — not as answers\, but as the strength to continue.

A multi-GRAMMY-nominated artist\, she has built a global reputation for music that is fearless\, soulful\, and deeply human. Blending blues\, rock\, gospel\, soul\, and Americana\, her sound reaches across genres while staying rooted in truth and storytelling. \nBorn and raised in Harlem\, Shemekia grew up surrounded by music and stepped onto the stage at just eight years old alongside her father\, blues legend Johnny Copeland. Since then\, she has carried that legacy forward while carving out a voice all her own—one that is bold\, commanding\, and impossible to ignore. \nHer latest album\, Blame It On Eve\, showcases both her signature power and her range\, balancing songs that take on real-world issues with moments of joy\, humor\, and celebration. It’s music that makes you think\, makes you feel\, and makes you move—all at once. \nOn stage\, Shemekia brings an energy that fills the space and draws people together. Her performances are more than concerts—they’re shared experiences rooted in connection\, resilience\, and joy. Whether she’s delivering a blues ballad or getting the crowd on their feet\, she creates moments that stay with you long after the music ends. \n  \nNikki D and the Sisters of Thunder – Nikki D & The Sisters of Thunder is a multi-generational family-based group from Toledo\, Ohio. Their unique style is Gospel with Blues riffs and grooves\, all punctuated by Nikki D’s wildly soulful and electrifying LapSteel guitar. In fact\, in 2016\, Guitar World magazine described Nikki as “The Jimi Hendrix of Sacred Steel”\, because of her willingness to experiment with vocal-like riffs and runs. She’s also a soulful vocalist that commands the attention of those that hear her raspy\, yet sultry voice. Nikki D is joined by Gloria Brown on Guitar\, Tomika Webb on Bass Guitar\, Christian Brown on Drums\, Gary Black on Keyboard\, and Belinda Brown and Latonja Degraffanreid on Vocals.\nTheir music has allowed them to open for artists like Jack White’s Raconteurs\, Grammy Award winner Ceelo Green and travel internationally to perform on the same stage as Sarah McLachlan. Their mission is to Impact Lives\, Inspire Hope and Ignite Joy. Wherever you see them perform\, you can expect a forecast of hand clapping and foot tapping! \n  \nPrimetime Blues Band – Prime Time Blues Band brings a high-energy blend of blues\, soul\, and classic R&B that gets people on their feet and feeling the music. Known for their tight musicianship and dynamic live shows\, this seasoned group delivers everything from smooth grooves to powerful\, guitar-driven blues. \nRooted in the traditions of the blues while keeping things fresh and fun\, Prime Time Blues Band creates a sound that connects across generations. Their performances are all about shared moments—songs you recognize\, rhythms you can move to\, and an energy that brings the whole crowd together. \nWhether you’re a lifelong blues fan or just discovering the genre\, Prime Time Blues Band invites everyone to settle in\, soak it up\, and enjoy the ride.

SUMMARY:Member’s Spotlight Exhibition: Simon Robins: Sociable
DESCRIPTION:June 5-27\, 2026 Opening Reception: June 5\, 6-8 pm The paintings in Simon Robins: Sociable\, contain imagery sourced from public domain and found photographs discovered through extensive research by the artist in digital archives. Cropping\, recoloring\, and recontextualizing these images\, Robins transforms fragments of anonymous histories into works that feel at once familiar and elusive. Robins’ practice is deeply informed by his work as a collections librarian and faculty member at University of Dayton\, where he regularly navigates institutional archives and historical image collections. By removing photographs from their original context\, his paintings invite viewers to reconsider how images shape collective memory and how archives reflect systems of power\, inclusion\, and omission. In these works\, Robins explores themes of social alienation\, belonging\, and the quiet tensions embedded within everyday interactions. His paintings evoke the visual language of post-war photography and design while raising timely questions about authorship\, historical bias\, and the lingering influence of institutional narratives. Through carefully composed and psychologically charged imagery\, Robins creates space for reflection on the ways people connect\, observe\, and exist within larger social structures. About the Artist: Originally from Portland\, Oregon and now based in Dayton\, Simon Robins has exhibited his work at the Dayton Society of Artists\, Rosewood Arts Center\, and The Contemporary Dayton. In 2025\, he received First Place in the Dayton Society of Artists Annual Members’ Exhibition and Second Place in The Contemporary Dayton’s Juried Members’ Exhibition. Robins earned a BA in History and Art History from Portland State University and a Master of Library and Information Studies from University of British Columbia. He currently works as a collections librarian and faculty member at the University of Dayton\, where his engagement with digital archives directly informs his artistic practice.
