SUMMARY:Susan B. Byrnes: Lightness and Weight
DESCRIPTION:A groundbreaking exploration of the paradoxes inherent in the human experience drawing from themes in Milan Kundera’s novel\, “The Unbearable Lightness of Being\,” Lightness & Weight will feature three new sound and sculptural installations that explore the complexities and dualities of the human condition. The exhibition will include a variety of non-traditional materials including cast iron\, tulle\, artificial hair\, glass\, smoke\, video\, and sound. Byrnes\, a sculptor and audio producer who most often uses her work to challenge and reflect on the burdens of sexism and the resilience of the female body\, will launch a companion podcast series featuring interviews with women artists across various media and backgrounds. Created through a new partnership between The Co and WYSO 91.3 FM\, the flagship National Public Radio (NPR) member station for the region\, the podcast will provide an important platform for female voices in the arts\, fostering dialogue and community engagement. Byrnes is a Cincinnati-based visual artist whose diverse body of work spans sculpture\, multimedia installation\, radio broadcasts\, writing\, and curatorial projects. SUMMARY:2025 Fine Art Student Juried Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The Sinclair Community College Art Department is pleased to present the 2025 Fine Art Student Juried Exhibition. Students who have been enrolled in fine art classes at Sinclair Community College within the past year are eligible to enter the annual Fine Art Student Juried Exhibition by submitting up to five original works produced for their art classes. This year’s juror\, Samuel Dunson\, will review the submissions\, select works for the exhibition\, and award best in show\, second\, and third place. Dunson\, a native of Dayton\, Ohio\, is a professor at Tennessee State University\, where he is in his twenty-fifth year of teaching art and design. Students juried into the exhibition may list their artwork for sale either to the public and/or to be sold to Sinclair Community College as Student Purchase Awards. The Purchase Award winners are committee selected and will be added to Sinclair’s art collection. Over 130 Student Purchase Awards are located throughout Sinclair’s Dayton and Centerville campuses. This program is made possible thanks to the generosity of Burnell R. Roberts and the Mauch Endowment Fund. The exhibition will be held in-person in the Burnell R. Roberts Triangle Gallery and the Works on Paper Gallery. Interested parties may view the show in person or online on the student website\, sinclaircollegeartgalleries.org. In addition\, the exhibition will be highlighted on the galleries’ Facebook and Instagram @sinclaircollegeartgalleries. There will be an open house reception open to the public on March 27\, 2025 from 4:30pm to 6pm\, Building 13\, 4th Floor Atrium. Awards are presented to Best in Show\, Second and Third Place. Award sponsors include Blick Art Materials\, Custom Frame Services\, Tartan Campus Store\, United Art and Education\, Professor Bridgette Bogle\, Professor Mark Echtner\, Professor Kay Koeninger\, and Associate Professor Anthony Wolking. This exhibition follows Wyeth’s entire career and looks at a specifically darker thread within his oeuvre of troubling and unnerving imagery. Unsettled is divided into three distinct sections: “Strangers and Specters;” “Natural and Supernatural Worlds;” and “Haunted Places and Disturbing Spaces.” Drawn from museums and private collections from across the country\, the DAI is the exclusive Ohio venue and the final stop for this major traveling exhibition. DESCRIPTION:Inspired by mid-century artists such as Robert Motherwell\, Joan Mitchell\, and Franz Kline\, Susanne Scherette King’s strong colors\, movement and motion\, and wide range of style make up the title of her show: Sway – Opening Reception on Thursday\, April 3rd from 6pm-9pm – Artist Talk on Saturday\, April 12th from 2pm-4pm For Susanne\, sway is motion\, range\, and scope. Over the 25 years of painting\, her style continues to change and evolve. She has created a diverse range of work for this show. Susanne has a B.S. degree in education from Valparaiso University and a master’s degree in differentiated instruction from Graceland University. She is a self-taught artist. Professionally she taught jr. high language arts and also independently designed. perennial gardens for many years After two life changing medical events\, her teaching career ended\, but by making some modifications in technique she continued to paint. She has had gallery shows in Dayton\, Columbus\, Indianapolis\, and Philadelphia. Lite refreshments served. Free on-street parking. \n

DESCRIPTION:The Dayton Art Institute (DAI) is excited to announce a new signature event called Curated\, presented by Thompson Hine\, which will take place at the museum on Thursday\, April 3\, 2025\, from 6–9 p.m. The event will offer guests the opportunity to sample a variety of handcrafted cocktails created by some of the region’s best bartenders while enjoying gourmet bites and tasty treats. With a mission-based focus on art conservation\, Curated was an event created to raise funds to preserve and protect an object from the DAI’s collection. Guests attending the event will have an opportunity to learn more about the DAI’s efforts to save the community’s art. The inaugural event’s fundraising efforts will be dedicated to the conservation of a work donated to the museum by benefactor Julia Shaw Patterson Carnell\, whose generosity and vision were crucial in the construction of the historic DAI. The artwork\, created in the late 18th–early 19th century\, is titled Contemplation on Manjushri’s Buddha Field and is a beautiful painting on fabric.  The conservation process will repair tears in the fabric\, stabilize loose paint on the artwork\, stabilize the textile brand around the perimeter of the painting and ultimately allow for safer handling and display of the artwork. \n“At the Dayton Art Institute\, we are trusted stewards of the art\, committed to caring for and preserving the priceless community treasures contained within the museum collection\,” said DAI Director & President Michael R. Roediger. “Our newest signature event\, Curated\, allows guests to come together with a defined goal of saving a particular artwork while enjoying an entertaining evening of fine cocktails and great company.” \n  \nThe fundraising event will feature 15 different cocktails created by local bartenders. Each guest attending will receive a punch card\, allowing them to sample a selection of the drinks and enjoy small bites provided by Bernstein’s Fine Catering. Spirits featured in the drinks include Chopin (Vodka)\, Drumshanbo (Gin)\, El Mayor Blanco (Tequila)\, Flor de Cana (Rum) and George Remus (Bourbon). \n  \nThe DAI is proud to work with a notable selection of local businesses for Curated\, including The Bar Time\, Bernstein’s Fine Catering\, Club Oceano\, Dewberry 1850\, Hotel Versailles\, Jimmie’s Ladder 11\, Joui\, Manna Uptown\, The Reserve on Third\, Smith’s Boathouse\, Sueño\, Tender Mercy\, Tuty’s Bar and Grill\, Whisperz Speakeasy and Wheat Penny. Each bartender participating will compete in two donate-to-vote competitions\, awarding winners for the crowd-favorite cocktail of the evening and the most creative bar decorations. Winners will receive a prize basket from the DAI\, as well as bragging rights.
