SUMMARY:Ferguson Voices: Disrupting the Frame
DESCRIPTION:Dayton Metro Library is pleased to host Ferguson Voices: Disrupting the Frame\, a profound exhibit produced by the University of Dayton Human Rights Center that will be on display through Friday\, August 30\, in the Opportunity Space @ St. Clair at the Main Library. \n  \nIn 2014\, after Michael Brown was shot and killed by police\, a 100-day uprising followed in Ferguson\, Missouri. Ferguson Voices features interviews and photographs of twelve individuals who responded to Brown’s death by showing contributions to their community during the protest – acting\, teaching\, repairing\, and advancing the cause of justice. \n  \nInitially created in 2016\, after nine University of Dayton students traveled to Missouri to interview people who were affected by the unrest of 2014\, Ferguson Voices seeks to humanize the individuals who witnessed and shaped the uprising and to show visitors that when communities are faced with difficult moments\, we all have a role to play. \n  \nA companion program hosted by the University of Dayton Human Rights Center will be held in the Opportunity Space @ St. Clair at 6 pm\, on Tuesday\, August 27. It will involve a panel discussion and provide a space for community members to come together and process the recent killing of 16-year-old Brian Moody by Dayton City Police. \n  \nThis discussion will utilize the exhibit to focus attention on police violence and community response and will re-ignite questions about the use of lethal force\, public trust and accountability\, and over-policing and radical discrimination. The announcement of panel guests in attendance will be forthcoming. \n  \nThis is the second time DML has had the honor of hosting Ferguson Voices; it first appeared at the Northwest Branch in 2017. \n  \nFor more information\, visit DaytonMetroLibrary.org or call the Library’s Ask Me Line at 937.463.2665. \n

SUMMARY:The Quiet World of Edward Hopper
DESCRIPTION:June 15–September 8\, 2024 \n\nFew artists have been able to convey a distinct vision of the world as directly as Edward Hopper (American\, 1882–1967). With great clarity\, Hopper expressed a deeply personal response to modern life with his enigmatic depictions of urban and rural environments. The everyday\, even mundane slices of life and ordinary subjects regularly indicate a psychological state of mind\, most often suggesting a sense of isolation or loneliness. He rejected the influences of European modernism to work in a realistic\, representational style\, and create a uniquely American point of view that expresses his response to living in the twentieth century. \nThe Quiet World of Edward Hopper\, an exclusive exhibition to the DAI\, will feature the holdings from the DAI collection\, which include a drawing\, etchings\, watercolor figure studies from his early years as an illustrator visiting Europe\, along with the celebrated painting High Noon\, 1949. The exhibition will also have key loans from other museums and private collections.

SUMMARY:Toubab Krewe
DESCRIPTION:Some music cannot be found on a map or within iTunes categories. Some music is so original it seems snatched from the great\, invisible substrata that runs below all human activity\, a sound aching to be born without a flag or fixed allegiance – free\, questing\, overflowing with immediate\, tangible life. This is the music of Toubab Krewe\, the vibrant instrumental powerhouse that creates a sonic Pangaea that lustily swirls together rock\, African traditions\, jam sensibilities\, international folk strains and more. While nearly impossible to put into any box\, it takes only a few moments to realize in a very palpable way that one is face-to-face with a true original who recognizes no borders in a march towards a muscular\, original\, globally switched-on sound. \nFormed in 2005\, Toubab Krewe has tenaciously honed their craft through relentless touring and a fierce dedication to carving out something they can truly call their own. The fruits of this hard work can be heard on their latest release\, STYLO\, (March 2nd\, 2018). What Justin Perkins (Kora\, Kamelngoni\, guitar\, percussion)\, Terrence Houston (drumset)\, Drew Heller (guitar\, organ)\, Justin Kimmel (bass\, keys)\, and Luke Quaranta (Djembe\, Congas\, Dundun\, Sangban\, Kinkini) have wrought on STYLO reflects the many miles and musical journeys that have transpired since their last studio album\, TK2. \nThis is a band that actively draws inspiration from whatever source floats into their purview\, something they’ve exhibited in their decade and a half of heavy gigging\, including regular appearances at major U.S. festivals like Bonnaroo\, High Sierra\, Rothbury and Wakarusa\, and abroad at such legendary gatherings as the Festival In The Desert in Essakane\, Mali. Whether on their own or collaborating with luminaries like the Last Poets’ Umar Bin Hassan or Uncle Earl’s Rayna Gellert\, Toubab Krewe has already earned the attention and respect of a broad musical community. \nToubab carries echoes of African greats like Ali Farka Toure\, Orchestra Baobab and Salif Keita\, no doubt picked up during the group’s travels to study and live in Guinea\, Ivory Coast and Mali. But what truly differentiates Toubab Krewe from other Statesiders inspired by African music is how they innovate on what they’ve learned instead of simply recreating tradition. Toubab Krewe carves out a new trail honoring the African originators they admire by making something alive and contemporary.

SUMMARY:Alanna Royale
DESCRIPTION:Laugh out loud funny and fearlessly outspoken\, one doesn’t have to wonder if Alanna Royale is in the room. Since storming the Nashville scene in 2013\, Royale has repeatedly made her presence known from calling out politicians she can’t stand to calling monopoly on her classically minded\, R&B sound. In her first year alone\, the artist landed headlining slots at Nashville Pride Fest and won “Road to Bonnaroo” with only an EP under her belt. After fine tuning her swagger fronting punk bands\, it appeared Royale had found her perfect niche marrying soul and pop. Or so she thought.
