SUMMARY:Heidi Brueckner and Jennifer Scheuer Exhibits
DESCRIPTION:The Sinclair Community College Art Department is pleased to present work by Heidi Brueckner and Jennifer Scheuer in the Burnell R. Roberts Triangle Gallery and Works on Paper Gallery. Inspired by observing others as a way to understand ourselves\, Brueckner creates intricate portraits filled with color\, pattern\, texture\, and a variety of recycled materials. These works produce narratives which explore personage through self-presentation\, facial expressions\, and gesture. They inspect the under-revered and appreciate the subject’s presence and dignity\, not only honoring the individual\, but the earth and humanity as a whole. Scheuer addresses ideas of healing\, the body\, plants\, and the history of medicine through printmaking. Much of her work responds to the historical idea of the Doctrine of Signatures\, which suggests visual or sensory properties of plants correlate to healing properties. Additionally\, she explores sequential imagery\, narrative complexity\, and play through artist books with their interactive\, sculptural\, and time-based qualities. There will be a virtual artist talk via Zoom on Thursday\, August 7\, 2025\, at 12pm. Visit www.sinclair.edu/artgalleries for details. The exhibitions will be on display from July 1–August 9\, 2025. DESCRIPTION:Curtis Barnes\, Sr.\, Dayton Icon\nJuly 12–September 14\, 2025 \nA painter and educator\, Curtis Barnes\, Sr. was a longtime fixture of Dayton’s art scene. His bold\, colorful\, experimental paintings are a distinctive blend of naturalism and abstraction. They frequently include self-portraits and portraiture depicting the people in his life. His influence is still felt today among his students and in the African American Visual Arts Guild\, which he co-founded with artist “Bing” Davis in 1992.  He was recognized for his artistic contribution and presented with the “Paul Laurence Dunbar Humanitarian Award” in 1994 and the “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the Ohio Arts Council in 2008. \nThis exhibition comes on the 90th anniversary of his birth and is a celebration of Barnes’ life and art. A DAI exclusive\, this collection of works was drawn from his family and friends.

DESCRIPTION:Throughout the summer months\, fun\, out-of-the-box entertainment can be found on Courthouse Square\, with CURIO serving as the hub of community\, connection\, and collaboration! \nBig ideas can come in small packages\, and CURIO is the first step in a larger\, longer-term plan to revitalize Courthouse Square. This shipping container transformed into an event hub has been combined with new outdoor seating and other touches to create downtown’s newest summer hotspot! CURIO is part of Summer in the City\, presented by AES Ohio. \nWe can hardly contain our excitement for a summer schedule featuring: \nCURIO: Lunch Box \nFree lunchtime entertainment Tuesdays-Thursdays\, 12-2 p.m. \nTrivia Tuesdays – bring your team to win prizes\nZENsdays – Unwind. Decompress. Read. Play a game. Relax and zen out on your lunch break.\nUnplugged Thursdays – live acoustic music or DJs \nBring your friends and coworkers for a midday break outside!\nCURIO: Lunch Box features free lunchtime entertainment from noon to 2 p.m. on Tuesdays\, Wednesdays\, and Thursdays each week during the summer months. \nFood vendors also set up on Courthouse Square each weekday\, allowing downtown workers and others to grab lunch from a vendor or a downtown restaurant and take in the entertainment while enjoying the outdoors downtown. \nBe sure to “Like” CURIO at Courthouse Square on Facebook to get the latest updates on upcoming entertainment and more. SUMMARY:Kayak Rentals at RiverScape with Taiter’s Kayak Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Part of RiverScape Kayak Rentals series \nKayak Rentals at RiverScape with Taiter’s Kayak Solutions\n4:00pm – 8:00pm \nAGE: 10 and up | $15.00\n\nPaddle under the fountains with Taiter’s Kayak Solutions all summer long at RiverScape MetroPark! Kayakers launch from under the Riverside Bridge along the Great Miami Recreational Trail\, and the cost to participate is $15 per person per hour. Taiter’s Kayak Solutions staff will provide participants with brief instructions prior to entering the water – including a safety tutorial – and will help participants get into their vessels. All participants will be required to wear a properly fitted life jacket. Swimming is prohibited in the Great Miami River\, but participants should come prepared to get wet. Participants will also not be permitted to go through the RiverScape River Run whitewater feature. No lifeguards are on duty\, and paddling is at all participants’ own risk. All participants will be required to sign a waiver before entering their vessel\, and all minors must have a parent/guardian present. SUMMARY:Community Workshop – Flourish and Flow: An Oil Painting Journey
DESCRIPTION:Our artist-led workshops are designed to make community connections between our guests\, local artists\, and The Dayton Art Institute through conversation and artmaking. Flourish and Flow: An Oil Painting Journey Date: Thursdays\, April 10\, 17 and 24\, and May 1 and 8 – 5:30–7:30 p.m Cost: $100 for museum members; $125 for non-members Ages: 18+ In this multi-session workshop series\, local artist Jamaal Durr leads participants through an exploration of the fundamentals of oil painting. Sessions will focus on layering\, blending\, and texture while developing skills through the creation of personalized artwork featuring birth flowers. Jamaal Durr\, a Contemporary Artist\, is recognized for his figurative works that intimately blend reality and the surreal. Using materials like oil paint\, charcoal\, and graphite\, he explores themes of identity and self-reflection through his timely narratives. Jamaal has expanded his capacity within the realm of Art\, having also gained experience as a Curator\, Teacher\, and Muralist. Jamaal is primarily self-taught\, having only received a couple of years of formal training at Stivers School for the Arts in Dayton\, OH and a brief stint studying architecture at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn\, NY.
