By combining different kinds of melodies and rhythms\, Calzada creates a fusion of sound that is indistinguishable and genuine\, all of which he classifies as “cico-délico”.\nPalette Knife – “Palette Knife is an emo\, indie\, and punk band from Columbus\, Ohio. The band consists of three members and released their second album\, New Game+\, on January 20\, 2023. The 13-song album is a concept album about the band being trapped in a video game controlled by a malicious AI called “Plus”. Each song on the album represents a boss that the band must defeat\, and each boss represents a different fear or anxiety that the band members must overcome to grow as people. The band members say that they love video games and that the band is a way for them to express their passions.”

FAMILY GALLERY\nTHE IRA & SUSAN THOMSEN FAMILY GALLERY \n\n\n\n\nSEP 6 – DEC 21\, 2024\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDayton native\, Curtis Mann\, returns home to present an experimental new body of work inspired by reflections on his childhood attending Parochial schools\, his mother’s Catholic funeral services this past May\, and the challenges he faced hiding and then embracing his atheism. Using a mixture of personal family photographs\, found\, and AI-generated images\, Mann has cut and affixed them to shards of glass to create sculptural collages. The work presents us with questions about what a photograph is\, about the precarious space between the image and the object\, and about the larger ideas of absolute faith\, its teachings\, and leaders. The work also serves as a love letter to his mother and his own feelings of mortality. Curated by Jeffrey Cortland Jones. \nMann is a graduate of the University of Dayton\, where he worked under the mentorship of Sean Wilkinson\, whose work is on view in the companion exhibition\, Flora\, also on view. Photographed over many seasons at Dayton’s Five Rivers MetroParks\, Wilkinson brings attention to change\, the overlooked\, the undisturbed\, and how profoundly meditative life can be. Curated by Jeffrey Cortland Jones. \nWilkinson is a Distinguished Service Professor and Professor Emeritus at the University of Dayton\, where he served as chair of the Department of Visual Arts and as the Graul Endowed Chair in Arts and Languages. He is the recipient of several Ohio Arts Council and Montgomery County Fellowships among many other awards and prizes. DESCRIPTION:Projects Unlimited Gem Series Opener Guitars4Heroes\nThe Dayton Guitars 4 Heroes Band was established in January 2019. The G4H Band plays a variety of classic rock\, classic country\, and patriotic music. The G4H Band is a non-profit\, all-veteran band with exception of one person. Al Jones\, drummer\, and vocals\, has volunteered his time from the beginning for all weekly rehearsals and all our shows. He said “This was just the way to give back.” The other band members are Ron Burns\, rhythm guitar\, vocals\, Art Nitsch\, bass guitar\, vocals\, Mike Collins\, lead guitar\, backup vocals Jerry Greer\, rhythm/lead electric guitar\, Karen Nitsch\, vocalist\, and percussion. All these 5 are military veterans who also volunteer their time to give back to raise money to support the Rec4Heroes/Dayton Organization.

This month\, the Main Library will host two programs for adults\, one a new book club and the other a special guest speaker. \n  \nRainbow Readout\, Monday\, September 16\, 7-8 pm\, Main Library\, Conference Room 3A: DML’s LGBTQIA+ Services Specialist has pre-selected a non-fiction book they will read ahead of time. Patrons will receive a presentation of that book\, its arguments\, critiques it has received\, and considerations it can teach about life. Questions and conversation will be encouraged. If patrons would like to read the book for better participation\, it is Who’s Afraid of Gender? by Judith Butler. Butler is an award-winning\, internationally known\, non-binary gender theorist. A few copies of this book are available for check out at the Main Library\, but it is also available in eBook and Audiobook format through DML’s Libby app. \n  \nHow Does the City Commission Work?\, Tuesday\, September 17\, 7-8 pm\, Main Library\, Eichelberger Forum: DML welcomes Dayton City Commissioner Shenise-Turner Sloss for a special informational Q&A session. DESCRIPTION:Part of RiverScape Kayak Rentals series \nKayak Rentals at RiverScape with Taiter’s Kayak Solutions\n2:00pm – 6:00pm \nAGE: 14 and up | $12.00\nPaddle under the fountains with Taiter’s Kayak Solutions all summer long at RiverScape MetroPark! Regular walk-up rental hours will take place Tuesdays from 2-6pm and Thursdays from 4-8pm\, June-October. Launch from under the Riverside Bridge along the Great Miami Recreational Trail. The cost to participate is $12 per person per hour. Taiter’s Kayak Solutions staff will provide visitors with brief instructions prior to entering the water\, which will include a safety tutorial\, and help visitors get into their vessels. All visitors will be required to wear a properly fitted life jacket. Swimming is prohibited in the Great Miami River\, but visitors should come prepared to get wet. Those renting will not be permitted to go through the RiverScape River Run whitewater feature. No lifeguards are on duty\, and paddling is at all visitors’ own risk.
