SUMMARY:CURTIS MANN: Precious Blood
DESCRIPTION:CURTIS MANN: Precious Blood\n\n\n\n\nTHE DR. ROBERT L. BRANDT JR. FAMILY GALLERY\nTHE IRA & SUSAN THOMSEN FAMILY GALLERY \n\n\n\n\nSEP 6 – DEC 21\, 2024\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDayton native\, Curtis Mann\, returns home to present an experimental new body of work inspired by reflections on his childhood attending Parochial schools\, his mother’s Catholic funeral services this past May\, and the challenges he faced hiding and then embracing his atheism. Using a mixture of personal family photographs\, found\, and AI-generated images\, Mann has cut and affixed them to shards of glass to create sculptural collages. The work presents us with questions about what a photograph is\, about the precarious space between the image and the object\, and about the larger ideas of absolute faith\, its teachings\, and leaders. The work also serves as a love letter to his mother and his own feelings of mortality. Curated by Jeffrey Cortland Jones. \nMann is a graduate of the University of Dayton\, where he worked under the mentorship of Sean Wilkinson\, whose work is on view in the companion exhibition\, Flora\, also on view. His work has been exhibited widely\, most notably at the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, New York; the Centre Georges Pompidou\, Paris\, France; the Whitney Museum of American Art\, New York; and the Museum of Contemporary Art\, Chicago. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOPENING NIGHT / SEP 6\n\n\n\n\nMembers Preview with the Artist 5-6 pm / Public Reception 6-8 pm \n\n\n\n\nARTIST TALK / NOV 22 / 6:30 pm\n\n\n\n\nCurtis Mann and Sean Wilkinson in Conversation with artist and writer\, Carmen Winant \nDoors open 6 pm / Reception immediately following ‘til 8 pm / FREE & open to all / The Tank at The Dayton Arcade

SUMMARY:SEAN WILKINSON: Flora
DESCRIPTION:SEAN WILKINSON: Flora\n\n\n\n\nTHE MITOSIS GALLERY \n\n\n\n\nSEP 6 – DEC 21\, 2024\n\n\n\n\n\nWilkinson’s ongoing series of photographs\, Flora (2020-2024) are the artist’s response to the exuberant vitality of plants\, their thrusting and thriving\, their boundless energy and raw power\, their elegance and grace\, their constant changing\, and their utter disregard for anything to do with the human world. Photographed over many seasons at Dayton’s Five Rivers MetroParks\, Wilkinson brings attention to change\, the overlooked\, the undisturbed\, and how profoundly meditative life can be. Curated by Jeffrey Cortland Jones. \nWilkinson is a Distinguished Service Professor and Professor Emeritus at the University of Dayton\, where he served as chair of the Department of Visual Arts and as the Graul Endowed Chair in Arts and Languages. He is the recipient of several Ohio Arts Council and Montgomery County Fellowships among many other awards and prizes. His work has been widely exhibited and housed in over twenty-five significant collections. \n\n\n\n\n\nOPENING NIGHT / SEP 6\n\n\n\n\nMembers Preview with the Artist 5-6 pm / Public Reception 6-8 pm \n\n\n\n\nARTIST TALK / NOV 22 / 6:30 pm\n\n\n\n\nCurtis Mann and Sean Wilkinson in Conversation with artist and writer\, Carmen Winant \nDoors open 6 pm / Reception immediately following ‘til 8 pm / FREE & open to all / The Tank at The Dayton Arcade

SUMMARY:Images from Storytellers: 2024 FotoFocus Biennial: backstories
DESCRIPTION:“Images from Storytellers” is part of the 2024 FotoFocus Biennial: backstories. October 4th: Opening Reception – 6pm-9pm October 5th: Photographer Talk – 1pm-3pm Every gathering of people has a backstory. Opening October 3\, 2024\, “Images from Storytellers” features a mixture of unchoreographed and staged photographic records from gatherings that reveal differing perspectives and relationships between photographer and subject. The works are created from various vantage points that do not necessarily feature the main event\, but instead a necessary backstory. Photographers often capture moments that represent these alternate ideas\, in spite of knowing these are not the desired images\, believing they are key moments that must exist to capture the interaction\, behavior\, and emotion of those involved. Artists: Gregory Changa Freeman\, Susanne Conyers\, Shon Curtis\, Alfred Powell\, James Steppenwolf Hernandez Light Refreshments provided. Free on-street parking. Exhibition open October 3rd thru October 26th Curator: Ed Dixon\, Founder of Edward A. Dixon Gallery #FotoFocus #FotoFocus2024

SUMMARY:Kintsugi Breast Cancer Photo Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Dayton Metro Library will host the Kintsugi Breast Cancer Photo Exhibit in the Main Library’s Opportunity Space at St. Clair from Monday\, September 30 through Friday\, October 11\, with a special reception on Thursday\, October 3\, from 5:30-7 pm in the Opportunity Space as well. \n  \nThe exhibit features breast cancer survivors from the Dayton area\, and patrons will be able to hear behind the scenes details about the exhibit at this reception\, as well as survivors sharing their stories and experiences. Resources for those who may be experiencing breast cancer will also be available. Organizations on hand will include Breast Wishes; Pink Ribbon Good; Noble Circle; The Well; Center for Women’s Wellness; and Christina Siegel R.N.\, B.S.N.\, Tattoo Nipple Fairy. \n  \nThe Kintsugi Breast Cancer Photo Exhibit was created by Carolyn Reveal\, a two-time breast cancer survivor. Kintsugi is an ancient Japanese art that takes something broken and puts it back together using a precious metal\, such as gold – thus an object’s breakage becomes part of its history\, not something to disguise. Inspired by this art\, Reveal and other survivors have used it as a healing tool. \n  \nPatrons who visit this exhibit will see how breast cancer has been used to create something stronger and more beautiful and are reminded that this exhibit may include personal and sensitive images and text. \n  \nFor more information\, visit DaytonMetroLibrary.org or call the Library’s Ask Me Line at 937.463.2665.

SUMMARY:Exhibit: America the Borderland
DESCRIPTION:Dayton Metro Library is hosting an exhibit titled America the Borderland in the Main Library’s Atrium. It is a multiplatform storytelling project that shines light on changemakers positively impacting their communities along the border between Mexico and the United States. At a time when immigration is at the forefront of a volatile and polarized national debate\, the stories of these changemakers\, shared in their own words\, provide a nuanced and authentic perspective that is often missing from mainstream coverage. \n  \nAmerica the Borderland was created after a team of University of Dayton undergraduate students traveled to El Paso\, Texas and Ciudad Juárez\, Mexico\, along with faculty members and practitioners in May 2018\, as part of the Moral Courage Project. The student team was trained in interviewing techniques\, fieldwork and documentary ethics\, and border politics and history. They collaborated with grassroots organizations\, immersed themselves in immigrant communities\, collected testimony from everyday changemakers and documented the experience through photography – the result being America the Borderland. \n  \nThe Moral Courage Project also created the exhibit Ferguson Voices: Disrupting the Frame\, their first\, which was also on display in the Main Library in August. With Borderland\, The Project iterated the same model of first-person storytelling and distribution by shifting the lens south to capture visual stories that was used in Ferguson. \n  \nAmerica the Borderland will be on display through Tuesday\, October 15\, at the Main Library\, located at 215 E. Third St.\, Dayton\, 45402. Information in this release was provided by Joel Pruce\, Human Rights Center\, University of Dayton. SUMMARY:“White Like Me” Discussion & viewing of pre-recorded video by Tim Wise
DESCRIPTION:Join Sinclair’s Chief Diversity Officer\, Michael Carter\, for a viewing and discussion of the pre-recorded video by Tim Wise. Using stories from his own life\, Wise examines what it really means to be white in a nation created to benefit people who are “white like him.” This inherent racism is not only real\, but disproportionately burdens people of color and makes progressive social change less likely to occur. Explaining in clear and convincing language why it is in everyone’s best interest to fight racial inequality\, Wise offers ways in which white people can challenge these unjust privileges\, resist white supremacy and racism\, and ultimately help to ensure the country’s personal and collective well-being. \nThis event is free and open to the public.
