SUMMARY:Exhibit: Curtis Barnes\, Sr.\, Dayton Icon
DESCRIPTION:Curtis Barnes\, Sr.\, Dayton Icon\nJuly 12–September 14\, 2025 \nA painter and educator\, Curtis Barnes\, Sr. was a longtime fixture of Dayton’s art scene. His bold\, colorful\, experimental paintings are a distinctive blend of naturalism and abstraction. They frequently include self-portraits and portraiture depicting the people in his life. His influence is still felt today among his students and in the African American Visual Arts Guild\, which he co-founded with artist “Bing” Davis in 1992.  He was recognized for his artistic contribution and presented with the “Paul Laurence Dunbar Humanitarian Award” in 1994 and the “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the Ohio Arts Council in 2008. \nThis exhibition comes on the 90th anniversary of his birth and is a celebration of Barnes’ life and art. A DAI exclusive\, this collection of works was drawn from his family and friends.

SUMMARY:Photographer Cory Richards: The Color Of Everything
DESCRIPTION:Climbing legend\, mental health advocate\, and global raconteur\, Cory Richards has photographed for National Geographic in the most remote corners of the globe. This epic tale of risk and adventure is told by a man who lives madly to avoid going mad. In this quest\, Cory has climbed Everest\, paddled Botswana’s Okavango\, and battled Antarctica’s katabatic winds to make the first ascent of its tallest tower. But\, in the midst of a wildly successful adventure photography career\, a catastrophic avalanche changed everything\, forcing Cory to confront the trauma of his past\, grapple with how he defines success\, and reexamine the cost of fame and addiction. His courage and resilience in the face of pain offer a hopeful reframing of what it means to be human. \nAs a professional climber\, his early career was defined by high-risk expeditions capturing stories out of reach to others. On the descent from summiting Gasherbrum II in the Karakoram Himalaya of Pakistan\, Cory and his team were swept away by an avalanche in which they were all buried\, narrowly escaping with their lives. His documentation of the climb and aftermath of the avalanche became the award-winning documentary Cold and the cover story of the 125th anniversary issue of National Geographic. In 2016\, Cory and climbing partner Adrian Ballinger climbed Everest without the use of supplemental oxygen\, sharing it in real-time through Snapchat and garnering over two billion media impressions. Cory is a National Geographic Adventurer of the Year and Photographer Fellow. As he shared with the world more recently\, Cory is also bipolar. His memoir\, The Color Of Everything (Penguin Random House\, June 2024)\, brings his inner landscape\, emotional struggles\, and a lifetime of exploration and adventure to the page.

SUMMARY:2025 Fine Art Faculty Exhibition Featuring Bridgette Bogle
DESCRIPTION:Event Title: 2025 Fine Art Faculty Exhibition Featuring Bridgette Bogle Event Description: Sinclair Community College’s annual Fine Art Faculty Exhibition will usher in the beginning of the 2025-2026 academic year. Each fall\, the Burnell R. Roberts Triangle Gallery\, the Works on Paper Gallery\, as well as other spaces around Building 13 display work from the faculty and adjunct faculty of Sinclair’s Art Department. The Burnell R. Roberts Triangle Gallery traditionally features one faculty member\, and this year will exhibit works by Professor Bridgette Bogle. Bogle’s exhibition is a reflection on her weekly walks through Woodland Cemetery. Colored pencil drawings along with installation work consisting of discarded polyester petals from the cemetery examine the contrast of the natural landscape and human-made artifacts of grief. This body of work explores the complexity of loss\, the impulse to both mimic and disrupt nature\, impermanence\, and the passage of time. There will be a virtual artist talk with Professor Bogle over Zoom on September 12\, 2025 at 12pm. A reception will be held September 4 from 4:30pm-6pm in Building 13’s 4th Floor Atrium. Visit sinclair.edu/artgalleries for further details. The Fine Art Faculty Exhibition will be on display from August 18 through September 19\, 2025. Gallery spaces are located on the third and fourth floor of building 13 (located at W. Fifth and S. Perry Streets). The galleries are free and open to the public from 8am–6pm Monday–Friday and 9–12 Saturdays.

SUMMARY:Wake Up: Stories from the Frontlines of Suicide Prevention
DESCRIPTION:In recognition of September as Suicide Prevention Month\, a screening of Wake Up: Stories from the Frontlines of Suicide Prevention will be held on Monday\, September 8\, from 6-9 pm\, on the campus of Sinclair Community College\, Smith Auditorium\, Building 12. September 8 is specifically noted as 988 Day (#988)\, which is observed to raise awareness about the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Jordan Ostrum\, a Community Impact Specialist for DML\, acknowledges that\, “We’re all aware of how divided we feel these days\, but Wake Up is unifying because it focuses on college students\, gun owners\, veterans\, and LGBTQIA+ individuals who are all at a high risk of dying by suicide. These groups don’t always interact with one another\, yet they are brought together to address this important topic.” \n  \nA guest panel made up of members from each of the above-mentioned groups will share their stories\, thus providing a stronger support system to show others that they are not alone. “DML is proud to be able to partner with over ten different local organizations so that we can break the stigma\, continue the conversation\, and send a message that everyone is free to belong\,” Ostrum adds. \n  \nPatrons are encouraged to use #988DAYton on social media platforms to show support for this event. The Smith Auditorium\, Building 12\, is in the Sinclair Conference Center at the corner of S. Perry and W. 4th Streets in Dayton\, 45402.
