PACO is a non-profit organization dedicated to the success of the Hispanic/Latino community in the Dayton\, OH area. This Festival is PACO’s largest fundraiser of the year and it enables PACO to fulfill its mission through scholarships to local students\, events to support the local Hispanic/Latino community and promote Hispanic/Latino culture\, and other charitable initiatives. Photographed over many seasons at Dayton’s Five Rivers MetroParks\, Wilkinson brings attention to change\, the overlooked\, the undisturbed\, and how profoundly meditative life can be. Curated by Jeffrey Cortland Jones. \nWilkinson is a Distinguished Service Professor and Professor Emeritus at the University of Dayton\, where he served as chair of the Department of Visual Arts and as the Graul Endowed Chair in Arts and Languages. He is the recipient of several Ohio Arts Council and Montgomery County Fellowships among many other awards and prizes. FAMILY GALLERY\nTHE IRA & SUSAN THOMSEN FAMILY GALLERY \n\n\n\n\nSEP 6 – DEC 21\, 2024\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDayton native\, Curtis Mann\, returns home to present an experimental new body of work inspired by reflections on his childhood attending Parochial schools\, his mother’s Catholic funeral services this past May\, and the challenges he faced hiding and then embracing his atheism. Using a mixture of personal family photographs\, found\, and AI-generated images\, Mann has cut and affixed them to shards of glass to create sculptural collages. The work presents us with questions about what a photograph is\, about the precarious space between the image and the object\, and about the larger ideas of absolute faith\, its teachings\, and leaders. The work also serves as a love letter to his mother and his own feelings of mortality. Curated by Jeffrey Cortland Jones. \nMann is a graduate of the University of Dayton\, where he worked under the mentorship of Sean Wilkinson\, whose work is on view in the companion exhibition\, Flora\, also on view. Aspiring writers can expect a jam-packed day with workshops and writing-themed activities. Over 30 local writers are scheduled to attend\, many of whom will facilitate workshops throughout the day and/or will have books for sale. \n  \nWorkshops \n\nSo you want to be a writer?\n\nThis Q&A session will give guests a chance to gain insight from others\, learn tips and tricks of the trade\, and learn how to stay motivated. \n\nGuerilla Publishing\n\nDiscussion of the basics of publishing\, including obstacles and how to kickstart projects. \n\nCrafting Compelling Characters: A Guide to Creating Memorable Figures in Novels\n\nExplore the essential elements of building characters that resonate with readers and drive a story. \n\nBeyond Books: Exploring Untraditional Formats in Writing\n\nPanelists will discuss creative possibilities beyond traditional prose. \n  \nWilliam D. Cornwell III\, a local writer returning for his second year\, comments further on what aspiring writers can expect. “You’ll be able to spin a prize wheel\, color your own bookmark\, or explore the Unmasked Heroes Exhibit presented by the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center. If that isn’t enough […] each featured author will have their own vendor table where you can purchase books\, pick up trinkets or candy\, or maybe just say hello and have a chat.” Cornwell adds that one of the best things about the symposium is the “feeling of community” that is created. \n  \nDML’s Author and Writers Symposium is free to attend and registration is not required. The Main Library is located at 215 East Third Street\, Dayton\, 45402\, with a free\, attached parking garage located on the St. Clair side of the Library. Using a mixture of personal family photographs\, found\, and AI-generated images\, Mann has cut and affixed them to shards of glass to create sculptural collages. The work presents us with questions about what a photograph is\, about the precarious space between the image and the object\, and about the larger ideas of absolute faith\, its teachings\, and leaders. The work also serves as a love letter to his mother and his own feelings of mortality. Curated by Jeffrey Cortland Jones. \nMann is a graduate of the University of Dayton\, where he worked under the mentorship of Sean Wilkinson\, whose work is on view in the companion exhibition\, Flora\, also on view. DESCRIPTION:Part of RiverScape Community Fitness series \nTai Chi & Qigong at the River\n6:00pm – 7:00pm \nAGE: All ages | FREE\nOffered by Immortal Tree Qigong. Each hour-long Tai Chi & Qigong session will start with breathing exercises\, warm up\, and gentle stretching. You will then be guided through flowing movements mixed with short standing meditations. We will end with a slightly longer guided standing (or sitting) meditation. This should leave a few minutes to answer questions or discuss any insights. DESCRIPTION:Part of RiverScape Kayak Rentals series \nKayak Rentals at RiverScape with Taiter’s Kayak Solutions\n2:00pm – 6:00pm \nAGE: 14 and up | $12.00\nPaddle under the fountains with Taiter’s Kayak Solutions all summer long at RiverScape MetroPark! Regular walk-up rental hours will take place Tuesdays from 2-6pm and Thursdays from 4-8pm\, June-October. Launch from under the Riverside Bridge along the Great Miami Recreational Trail. The cost to participate is $12 per person per hour. Taiter’s Kayak Solutions staff will provide visitors with brief instructions prior to entering the water\, which will include a safety tutorial\, and help visitors get into their vessels. All visitors will be required to wear a properly fitted life jacket. Swimming is prohibited in the Great Miami River\, but visitors should come prepared to get wet. Those renting will not be permitted to go through the RiverScape River Run whitewater feature. No lifeguards are on duty\, and paddling is at all visitors’ own risk. DESCRIPTION:Dayton Metro Library supports PRIDE all year long by offering a variety of LGBTQIA+ programs for all ages. This month\, the Main Library will host two programs for adults\, one a new book club and the other a special guest speaker. \n  \nRainbow Readout\, Monday\, September 16\, 7-8 pm\, Main Library\, Conference Room 3A: DML’s LGBTQIA+ Services Specialist has pre-selected a non-fiction book they will read ahead of time. Patrons will receive a presentation of that book\, its arguments\, critiques it has received\, and considerations it can teach about life. Questions and conversation will be encouraged. If patrons would like to read the book for better participation\, it is Who’s Afraid of Gender? by Judith Butler. Butler is an award-winning\, internationally known\, non-binary gender theorist.
