SUMMARY:Learning to Love Your Enemies
DESCRIPTION:Giulia Nesi Tetreau\, practitioner of Christian Science healing and international speaker\, will present her talk\, “Learning to Love Your Enemies\,” on October 5 at 11:00am at the Dayton Main Library. \nThe talk will focus on universal healing precepts found in the Holy Bible\, especially in Christ Jesus’ life and teachings\, showing how they are available for anyone to understand and experience through the lens of Christian Science. The talk is free\, open to the community\, and hosted by First Church of Christ\, Scientist\, Dayton. \n“Is someone in your life hard to love?” asks Ms. Tetreau. “Loving others\, including those who may feel like enemies\, can sometimes feel impossible. Christian Science proves that loving your enemy is not only possible\, it is natural. But what does it look like to lead with Love\, instead of hate? The study of this divine Science and answering Christ Jesus’ call to ‘love your enemies’ in your life replaces anger\, hurt\, and injustice with forgiveness\, freedom\, and peace.” \nSharing examples of healing from her own life and professional practice of Christian Science\, Ms. Tetreau will explain why Christian Science is both Christian and scientific\, meaning that people can prove its effectiveness for themselves\, as fully described in the book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures\, written by the founder of the Christian Science movement\, Mary Baker Eddy. \nMs. Tetreau will also touch on the life of Mary Baker Eddy\, who came to understand\, confirm\, and teach what she felt was original Christian healing. Eddy herself said she was especially inspired by Jesus’ demand\, “He that believes on me\, the works that I do will he do also; and greater works than these will he do\, because I go unto my Father” (found in the Gospel of John 14:12 in the Bible). \nFor over 150 years\, people around the world have worked to follow Christ Jesus in this practice of Christianity and continue to do so today\, experiencing healings of physical ills and personal difficulties. \nGiulia Nesi Tetreau has been a Christian Science practitioner for many years\, helping people on a daily basis through this scientific approach to prayer. She travels from her home base in Fairfield\, Connecticut\, USA\, to speak to audiences around the world as a member of the Christian Science Board of Lectureship.

SUMMARY:Kintsugi Breast Cancer Photo Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Dayton Metro Library will host the Kintsugi Breast Cancer Photo Exhibit in the Main Library’s Opportunity Space at St. Clair from Monday\, September 30 through Friday\, October 11\, with a special reception on Thursday\, October 3\, from 5:30-7 pm in the Opportunity Space as well. \n  \nThe exhibit features breast cancer survivors from the Dayton area\, and patrons will be able to hear behind the scenes details about the exhibit at this reception\, as well as survivors sharing their stories and experiences. Resources for those who may be experiencing breast cancer will also be available. Organizations on hand will include Breast Wishes; Pink Ribbon Good; Noble Circle; The Well; Center for Women’s Wellness; and Christina Siegel R.N.\, B.S.N.\, Tattoo Nipple Fairy. \n  \nThe Kintsugi Breast Cancer Photo Exhibit was created by Carolyn Reveal\, a two-time breast cancer survivor. Kintsugi is an ancient Japanese art that takes something broken and puts it back together using a precious metal\, such as gold – thus an object’s breakage becomes part of its history\, not something to disguise. Inspired by this art\, Reveal and other survivors have used it as a healing tool. \n  \nPatrons who visit this exhibit will see how breast cancer has been used to create something stronger and more beautiful and are reminded that this exhibit may include personal and sensitive images and text. \n  \nFor more information\, visit DaytonMetroLibrary.org or call the Library’s Ask Me Line at 937.463.2665.

SUMMARY:A Night in Conversation with Julia Quinn
DESCRIPTION:For fans of the Julia Quinn Bridgerton novel series\, Dayton Metro Library is the place to be. A Night in Conversation with Julia Quinn will be held on Tuesday\, October 1\, from 6-7 pm in the Main Library’s Eichelberger Forum\, or from the comfort of a location patrons may choose. \n  \nDuring her virtual visit to DML\, Quinn will discuss the significance of public libraries\, the right to read\, banned books\, and the concept of a book sanctuary\, which DML is proud to be. \n  \nQuinn is the 2024 National Ambassador for EveryLibrary\, whose mission is to “help public\, school\, and college libraries win funding at the ballot box\, ensuring stable funding and access to libraries for generations to come.” They “support grassroots groups across the country who defend and support their local library against book banning\, illicit political interference\, and threats of closure.” \n  \nQuinn will visit DML virtually\, so patrons can either register to participate in a “watch party\,” at the Main Library\, with the possibility to engage in a brief Q&A session\, or they can register to participate in a “view only” experience from home or another location outside of the Library. \n  \nQuinn is the author of the many titles within her Bridgerton novel series\, which has become a wildly popular TV show on Netflix. \n  \nRegistration is required for adults to participate in either the “watch party” or the “view only” options. For more information and to register\, visit DaytonMetroLibrary.org or call the Library’s Ask Me Line at 937.463.2665.

SUMMARY:Author and Writers Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Dayton Metro Library is excited to host its second annual Author and Writers Symposium on Saturday\, September 21\, from 10 am-5 pm\, at the Main Library. Aspiring writers can expect a jam-packed day with workshops and writing-themed activities. Over 30 local writers are scheduled to attend\, many of whom will facilitate workshops throughout the day and/or will have books for sale. \n  \nWorkshops \n\nSo you want to be a writer?\n\nThis Q&A session will give guests a chance to gain insight from others\, learn tips and tricks of the trade\, and learn how to stay motivated. \n\nGuerilla Publishing\n\nDiscussion of the basics of publishing\, including obstacles and how to kickstart projects. \n\nCrafting Compelling Characters: A Guide to Creating Memorable Figures in Novels\n\nExplore the essential elements of building characters that resonate with readers and drive a story. \n\nBeyond Books: Exploring Untraditional Formats in Writing\n\nPanelists will discuss creative possibilities beyond traditional prose. \n  \nWilliam D. The Main Library is located at 215 East Third Street\, Dayton\, 45402\, with a free\, attached parking garage located on the St. Clair side of the Library. SUMMARY:Historical Context & Local Impact
DESCRIPTION:Dayton Metro Library continues celebrating the 70th anniversary of historic Civil Rights court case Brown v. Board of Education with a series of commemorative discussions – the first being Historical Context & Local Impact. This program will be held on Tuesday\, September 10\, from 6-7:30 pm in the Main Library’s Eichelberger Forum. \n  \nIn the early 1950’s\, Reverend Oliver L. Brown\, along with a team of attorneys for the NAACP and 12 other parents\, along with cases from several other states\, filed a suit on behalf of their children against local boards of education for segregating public schools\, which became known as Brown v. the Board of Education of Topeka\, Kansas. The Supreme Court eventually ruled that separating children in public schools on the basis of race was in violation of the 14th Amendment\, making the act unconstitutional. \n  \nRev. Brown passed away in 1961 before knowing the impact this case would have on the nation. In May\, Rev. Brown’s daughter\, Cheryl Brown Henderson\, visited DML as part of its Social Justice Speaker Series to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education. DML continues honoring the legacy of Rev. Brown and others involved in this landmark case by hosting this special series. \n  \nHistorical Context & Local Impact will host a panel discussion with guests providing their perspectives\, anecdotes\, and historical insights into the importance of this case in Civil Rights history. Panel guests include Charlotte McGuire\, Ohio State Board of Education Representative\, District 3; Dr. David Lawrence\, Dayton Public Schools Superintendent; and Mattie White\, 1st Vice President NAACP and President of National Council of Negro Women\, Inc. DML’s Karen D. Brame of Special Collections will moderate the conversation. \n  \nThis is a free event for adults\, and registration is not required. For more information\, visit DaytonMetroLibrary.org or call the Library’s Ask Me Line at 937.463.2665.

SUMMARY:The Deeper the Roots – Striving for Universal Basic Income (UBI)
DESCRIPTION:Dayton Metro Library welcomes Michael D. Tubbs as its next Social Justice Speaker in The Deeper the Roots – Striving for Universal Basic Income (UBI) on Thursday\, September 5\, in the Main Library’s Eichelberger Forum\, from 6-7:30 pm. \n  \nTubbs will discuss the importance of UBI\, what it is\, how it can benefit the U.S.\, and what we can do to implement it. In 2021\, he released his book\, The Deeper the Roots: A Memoir of Hope and Home. Currently\, Tubbs is the Special Advisor to CA Governor Gavin Newsom for Economic Mobility and Opportunity\, founder of Mayors for Guaranteed Income (MGI)\, and founder of End Poverty in California (EPIC). \n  \nSponsored by Friends of the Dayton Metro Library\, the Social Justice Speaker Series aims to understand and demonstrate the effects of social justice in society\, offering speakers who are unique\, award-winning professionals who discuss some of the most critical social justice issues of today by providing insight from their professional fields and personal journeys. \n  \nFor more information about Tubbs’ achievements and the Social Justice Speaker Series\, visit DaytonMetroLibrary.org/SocialJustice. SUMMARY:Ferguson Voices: Disrupting the Frame
DESCRIPTION:Dayton Metro Library is pleased to host Ferguson Voices: Disrupting the Frame\, a profound exhibit produced by the University of Dayton Human Rights Center that will be on display through Friday\, August 30\, in the Opportunity Space @ St. Clair at the Main Library. \n  \nIn 2014\, after Michael Brown was shot and killed by police\, a 100-day uprising followed in Ferguson\, Missouri. Ferguson Voices features interviews and photographs of twelve individuals who responded to Brown’s death by showing contributions to their community during the protest – acting\, teaching\, repairing\, and advancing the cause of justice. \n  \nInitially created in 2016\, after nine University of Dayton students traveled to Missouri to interview people who were affected by the unrest of 2014\, Ferguson Voices seeks to humanize the individuals who witnessed and shaped the uprising and to show visitors that when communities are faced with difficult moments\, we all have a role to play. \n  \nA companion program hosted by the University of Dayton Human Rights Center will be held in the Opportunity Space @ St. Clair at 6 pm\, on Tuesday\, August 27. It will involve a panel discussion and provide a space for community members to come together and process the recent killing of 16-year-old Brian Moody by Dayton City Police. \n  \nThis discussion will utilize the exhibit to focus attention on police violence and community response and will re-ignite questions about the use of lethal force\, public trust and accountability\, and over-policing and radical discrimination. The announcement of panel guests in attendance will be forthcoming. \n  \nThis is the second time DML has had the honor of hosting Ferguson Voices; it first appeared at the Northwest Branch in 2017. \n  \nFor more information\, visit DaytonMetroLibrary.org or call the Library’s Ask Me Line at 937.463.2665. \n
