SUMMARY:Black Midwest Symposium Hosted by Black Midwest Initiative
DESCRIPTION:The Black Midwest Initiative hosts a biennial symposium that features artists\, activists\, academics\, and other community-involved people to discuss issues related to Black life in the Midwest. Past symposiums have been hosted in Minneapolis and Detroit\, but in 2024 it is coming to Dayton! \nThe third biennial symposium unfolds under the illuminating theme of “Adaptive Reuse\,” a beacon for change in the Midwest’s urban landscapes. \nThis year’s theme\, “Adaptive Reuse\,” is more than a concept– it’s a call to action for Black communities and allies across the Midwest. Together\, we’ll delve into strategies for reimagining the spaces around us\, transforming neglected landscapes into thriving hubs of culture\, sustainability\, and innovation. \nRegistration is required: https://blst.uic.edu/black-midwest-initiative/symposium/registration/

SUMMARY:Kintsugi Breast Cancer Photo Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Dayton Metro Library will host the Kintsugi Breast Cancer Photo Exhibit in the Main Library’s Opportunity Space at St. Clair from Monday\, September 30 through Friday\, October 11\, with a special reception on Thursday\, October 3\, from 5:30-7 pm in the Opportunity Space as well. \n  \nThe exhibit features breast cancer survivors from the Dayton area\, and patrons will be able to hear behind the scenes details about the exhibit at this reception\, as well as survivors sharing their stories and experiences. Resources for those who may be experiencing breast cancer will also be available. Organizations on hand will include Breast Wishes; Pink Ribbon Good; Noble Circle; The Well; Center for Women’s Wellness; and Christina Siegel R.N.\, B.S.N.\, Tattoo Nipple Fairy. \n  \nThe Kintsugi Breast Cancer Photo Exhibit was created by Carolyn Reveal\, a two-time breast cancer survivor. Inspired by this art\, Reveal and other survivors have used it as a healing tool. \n  \nPatrons who visit this exhibit will see how breast cancer has been used to create something stronger and more beautiful and are reminded that this exhibit may include personal and sensitive images and text. \n  \nFor more information\, visit DaytonMetroLibrary.org or call the Library’s Ask Me Line at 937.463.2665.

SUMMARY:Learning to Love Your Enemies
DESCRIPTION:Giulia Nesi Tetreau\, practitioner of Christian Science healing and international speaker\, will present her talk\, “Learning to Love Your Enemies\,” on October 5 at 11:00am at the Dayton Main Library. \nThe talk will focus on universal healing precepts found in the Holy Bible\, especially in Christ Jesus’ life and teachings\, showing how they are available for anyone to understand and experience through the lens of Christian Science. The talk is free\, open to the community\, and hosted by First Church of Christ\, Scientist\, Dayton. \n“Is someone in your life hard to love?” asks Ms. Tetreau. “Loving others\, including those who may feel like enemies\, can sometimes feel impossible. Christian Science proves that loving your enemy is not only possible\, it is natural. But what does it look like to lead with Love\, instead of hate? The study of this divine Science and answering Christ Jesus’ call to ‘love your enemies’ in your life replaces anger\, hurt\, and injustice with forgiveness\, freedom\, and peace.” \nSharing examples of healing from her own life and professional practice of Christian Science\, Ms. Tetreau will explain why Christian Science is both Christian and scientific\, meaning that people can prove its effectiveness for themselves\, as fully described in the book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures\, written by the founder of the Christian Science movement\, Mary Baker Eddy. \nMs. Tetreau will also touch on the life of Mary Baker Eddy\, who came to understand\, confirm\, and teach what she felt was original Christian healing. Eddy herself said she was especially inspired by Jesus’ demand\, “He that believes on me\, the works that I do will he do also; and greater works than these will he do\, because I go unto my Father” (found in the Gospel of John 14:12 in the Bible). \nFor over 150 years\, people around the world have worked to follow Christ Jesus in this practice of Christianity and continue to do so today\, experiencing healings of physical ills and personal difficulties. \nGiulia Nesi Tetreau has been a Christian Science practitioner for many years\, helping people on a daily basis through this scientific approach to prayer. She travels from her home base in Fairfield\, Connecticut\, USA\, to speak to audiences around the world as a member of the Christian Science Board of Lectureship.
