DESCRIPTION:Dayton Metro Library’s final Social Justice Speaker of the year is Divergent: Thriving in a World that Wasn’t Designed for You\, on Thursday\, October 10\, in the Main Library’s Eichelberger Forum\, from 6-7:30 pm. \n  \nJenara Nerenberg\, author of Divergent Mind\, will discuss ADHD\, autism\, synesthesia\, high sensitivity\, sensory processing disorder\, and more during her visit. With nearly 15-20% of the population being neurodivergent\, Nerenberg will offer information on these topics\, in addition to a path forward to better support neurodivergent individuals. \n  \nDivergent Mind is an acclaimed book endorsed by several New York Times bestselling authors. It has also been translated into many foreign languages. Nerenberg is an award-winning author and producer and is named as a “Brave New Idea” speaker by The Aspen Institute. She graduated from Harvard School of Public Health and UC Berkley with advanced degrees in public health and race relations. \n  \nAdults and teens are welcome. SUMMARY:Learning to Love Your Enemies
DESCRIPTION:Giulia Nesi Tetreau\, practitioner of Christian Science healing and international speaker\, will present her talk\, “Learning to Love Your Enemies\,” on October 5 at 11:00am at the Dayton Main Library. \nThe talk will focus on universal healing precepts found in the Holy Bible\, especially in Christ Jesus’ life and teachings\, showing how they are available for anyone to understand and experience through the lens of Christian Science. The talk is free\, open to the community\, and hosted by First Church of Christ\, Scientist\, Dayton. \n“Is someone in your life hard to love?” asks Ms. Tetreau. “Loving others\, including those who may feel like enemies\, can sometimes feel impossible. Christian Science proves that loving your enemy is not only possible\, it is natural. But what does it look like to lead with Love\, instead of hate? The study of this divine Science and answering Christ Jesus’ call to ‘love your enemies’ in your life replaces anger\, hurt\, and injustice with forgiveness\, freedom\, and peace.” \nSharing examples of healing from her own life and professional practice of Christian Science\, Ms. Tetreau will explain why Christian Science is both Christian and scientific\, meaning that people can prove its effectiveness for themselves\, as fully described in the book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures\, written by the founder of the Christian Science movement\, Mary Baker Eddy. \nMs. Tetreau will also touch on the life of Mary Baker Eddy\, who came to understand\, confirm\, and teach what she felt was original Christian healing. Eddy herself said she was especially inspired by Jesus’ demand\, “He that believes on me\, the works that I do will he do also; and greater works than these will he do\, because I go unto my Father” (found in the Gospel of John 14:12 in the Bible). \nFor over 150 years\, people around the world have worked to follow Christ Jesus in this practice of Christianity and continue to do so today\, experiencing healings of physical ills and personal difficulties. \nGiulia Nesi Tetreau has been a Christian Science practitioner for many years\, helping people on a daily basis through this scientific approach to prayer. She travels from her home base in Fairfield\, Connecticut\, USA\, to speak to audiences around the world as a member of the Christian Science Board of Lectureship.

DESCRIPTION:For fans of the Julia Quinn Bridgerton novel series\, Dayton Metro Library is the place to be. A Night in Conversation with Julia Quinn will be held on Tuesday\, October 1\, from 6-7 pm in the Main Library’s Eichelberger Forum\, or from the comfort of a location patrons may choose. \n  \nDuring her virtual visit to DML\, Quinn will discuss the significance of public libraries\, the right to read\, banned books\, and the concept of a book sanctuary\, which DML is proud to be. \n  \nQuinn is the 2024 National Ambassador for EveryLibrary\, whose mission is to “help public\, school\, and college libraries win funding at the ballot box\, ensuring stable funding and access to libraries for generations to come.” They “support grassroots groups across the country who defend and support their local library against book banning\, illicit political interference\, and threats of closure.” \n  \nQuinn will visit DML virtually\, so patrons can either register to participate in a “watch party\,” at the Main Library\, with the possibility to engage in a brief Q&A session\, or they can register to participate in a “view only” experience from home or another location outside of the Library. \n  \nQuinn is the author of the many titles within her Bridgerton novel series\, which has become a wildly popular TV show on Netflix. \n  \nRegistration is required for adults to participate in either the “watch party” or the “view only” options. Orange Shirt Day\, and in honor of this\, DML will host two ‘Every Child Matters’ programs for all ages: \n  \n‘Every Child Matters’ Storytime\, 4-4:30 pm\, Main Library\, Story Corner: Autumn Lee\, a local Indigenous community leader\, will read and share stories about Indigenous experiences at residential boarding schools. Stories include: “When I was Eight\,” by Christy Jordan-Fenton and Margaret Pokiak-Fenton; “When We Were Alone\,” by David Robertson; “Stolen Words” by Melanie Florence; and “The Orange Shirt Story” by Phyllis Webstad. \n  \n‘Every Child Matters’ Film Screening\, 5:30-8 pm\, Eichelberger Forum: Patrons can participate in a film screening of Older Than America (NR\, 2008)\, which tells the story of a Native American woman being haunted by visions that compel her to seek the truth about a residential school. A discussion will also take place to educate and build awareness of Indigenous history\, prompting the question of how can educators diversity their strategies in teaching?

Cornwell III\, a local writer returning for his second year\, comments further on what aspiring writers can expect. “You’ll be able to spin a prize wheel\, color your own bookmark\, or explore the Unmasked Heroes Exhibit presented by the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center. If that isn’t enough […] each featured author will have their own vendor table where you can purchase books\, pick up trinkets or candy\, or maybe just say hello and have a chat.” Cornwell adds that one of the best things about the symposium is the “feeling of community” that is created. \n  \nDML’s Author and Writers Symposium is free to attend and registration is not required. The NEA Big Read Dayton is presented in partnership with the Fitz Center for Leadership in Community at the University of Dayton\, Daybreak Dayton\, the Paul Laurence Dunbar House\, the African American Visual Artists Guild (AAVAG)\, and other community partners\, with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.\nThe NEA Big Read Kick-Off Celebration will feature dialogues between Dr. ShaDawn Battle and Dr. Nancy McHugh and a cultural experience with food curated from London Coe of Peace on Fifth. DESCRIPTION:Dayton Metro Library supports PRIDE all year long by offering a variety of LGBTQIA+ programs for all ages. This month\, the Main Library will host two programs for adults\, one a new book club and the other a special guest speaker. \n  \nRainbow Readout\, Monday\, September 16\, 7-8 pm\, Main Library\, Conference Room 3A: DML’s LGBTQIA+ Services Specialist has pre-selected a non-fiction book they will read ahead of time. Patrons will receive a presentation of that book\, its arguments\, critiques it has received\, and considerations it can teach about life. Questions and conversation will be encouraged. If patrons would like to read the book for better participation\, it is Who’s Afraid of Gender? by Judith Butler. Butler is an award-winning\, internationally known\, non-binary gender theorist. DESCRIPTION:Dayton Metro Library supports PRIDE all year long by offering a variety of LGBTQIA+ programs for all ages. This month\, the Main Library will host two programs for adults\, one a new book club and the other a special guest speaker. \n  \nRainbow Readout\, Monday\, September 16\, 7-8 pm\, Main Library\, Conference Room 3A: DML’s LGBTQIA+ Services Specialist has pre-selected a non-fiction book they will read ahead of time. Patrons will receive a presentation of that book\, its arguments\, critiques it has received\, and considerations it can teach about life. Questions and conversation will be encouraged. If patrons would like to read the book for better participation\, it is Who’s Afraid of Gender? by Judith Butler. Butler is an award-winning\, internationally known\, non-binary gender theorist. SUMMARY:Historical Context & Local Impact
DESCRIPTION:Dayton Metro Library continues celebrating the 70th anniversary of historic Civil Rights court case Brown v. Board of Education with a series of commemorative discussions – the first being Historical Context & Local Impact. This program will be held on Tuesday\, September 10\, from 6-7:30 pm in the Main Library’s Eichelberger Forum. \n  \nIn the early 1950’s\, Reverend Oliver L. Brown\, along with a team of attorneys for the NAACP and 12 other parents\, along with cases from several other states\, filed a suit on behalf of their children against local boards of education for segregating public schools\, which became known as Brown v. the Board of Education of Topeka\, Kansas. The Supreme Court eventually ruled that separating children in public schools on the basis of race was in violation of the 14th Amendment\, making the act unconstitutional. \n  \nRev. Brown passed away in 1961 before knowing the impact this case would have on the nation. In May\, Rev. Brown’s daughter\, Cheryl Brown Henderson\, visited DML as part of its Social Justice Speaker Series to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education. DML continues honoring the legacy of Rev. Brown and others involved in this landmark case by hosting this special series. \n  \nHistorical Context & Local Impact will host a panel discussion with guests providing their perspectives\, anecdotes\, and historical insights into the importance of this case in Civil Rights history. Panel guests include Charlotte McGuire\, Ohio State Board of Education Representative\, District 3; Dr. David Lawrence\, Dayton Public Schools Superintendent; and Mattie White\, 1st Vice President NAACP and President of National Council of Negro Women\, Inc. DML’s Karen D. Brame of Special Collections will moderate the conversation. \n  \nThis is a free event for adults\, and registration is not required.
