Cornwell III\, a local writer returning for his second year\, comments further on what aspiring writers can expect. “You’ll be able to spin a prize wheel\, color your own bookmark\, or explore the Unmasked Heroes Exhibit presented by the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center. If that isn’t enough […] each featured author will have their own vendor table where you can purchase books\, pick up trinkets or candy\, or maybe just say hello and have a chat.” Cornwell adds that one of the best things about the symposium is the “feeling of community” that is created. \n  \nDML’s Author and Writers Symposium is free to attend and registration is not required. DESCRIPTION:Dayton Metro Library continues celebrating the 70th anniversary of historic Civil Rights court case Brown v. Board of Education with a series of commemorative discussions – the first being Historical Context & Local Impact. This program will be held on Tuesday\, September 10\, from 6-7:30 pm in the Main Library’s Eichelberger Forum. \n  \nIn the early 1950’s\, Reverend Oliver L. Brown\, along with a team of attorneys for the NAACP and 12 other parents\, along with cases from several other states\, filed a suit on behalf of their children against local boards of education for segregating public schools\, which became known as Brown v. the Board of Education of Topeka\, Kansas. The Supreme Court eventually ruled that separating children in public schools on the basis of race was in violation of the 14th Amendment\, making the act unconstitutional. \n  \nRev. Brown passed away in 1961 before knowing the impact this case would have on the nation. In May\, Rev. Brown’s daughter\, Cheryl Brown Henderson\, visited DML as part of its Social Justice Speaker Series to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education. DML continues honoring the legacy of Rev. Brown and others involved in this landmark case by hosting this special series. \n  \nHistorical Context & Local Impact will host a panel discussion with guests providing their perspectives\, anecdotes\, and historical insights into the importance of this case in Civil Rights history. Panel guests include Charlotte McGuire\, Ohio State Board of Education Representative\, District 3; Dr. David Lawrence\, Dayton Public Schools Superintendent; and Mattie White\, 1st Vice President NAACP and President of National Council of Negro Women\, Inc. DML’s Karen D. Brame of Special Collections will moderate the conversation. \n  \nThis is a free event for adults\, and registration is not required. Tubbs as its next Social Justice Speaker in The Deeper the Roots – Striving for Universal Basic Income (UBI) on Thursday\, September 5\, in the Main Library’s Eichelberger Forum\, from 6-7:30 pm. \n  \nTubbs will discuss the importance of UBI\, what it is\, how it can benefit the U.S.\, and what we can do to implement it. UBI is a proposition that the U.S. government give adult citizens a set amount of money without the basis of wealth or employment as a condition – in hopes of reducing poverty and helping citizens meet their basic needs. \n  \nAt the age of 26\, Tubbs was elected the Mayor of Stockton\, CA\, in 2016 – making him the city’s first Afro-American mayor and the youngest mayor of any major city in U.S. history. In 2021\, he released his book\, The Deeper the Roots: A Memoir of Hope and Home. SUMMARY:Gerrymandering in Ohio and the Citizens Not Politicians Amendment with Retired Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor
DESCRIPTION:Dayton Metro Library is hosting a program to bring awareness to an amendment on the November ballot that could change the landscape of how voter voices are heard. \n  \nGerrymandering in Ohio and the Citizens Not Politicians Amendment with Retired Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor\, Main Library\, Eichelberger Forum\, Tuesday\, August 20\, 6:30-8 pm: Join retired Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor as she discusses Ohio’s decades-long fight for fair voting maps\, in addition to how the Citizens Not Politicians Amendment came to be\, how it would work\, and how it could impact Ohio. \n  \nIt is with hope that the Citizens Not Politicians Amendment “initiative will eliminate the state’s politician-dominated commission for drawing state and federal legislative districts and would create a 15-member Ohio Citizens Redistricting Commission (OCRC)\, with members selected by citizens\, not politicians. The OCRC would be made up of Democrats\, Republicans\, and Independent Ohio Voters\,” according to citiznesnotpoliticians.org. \n  \nThis program is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of the Greater Dayton Area. DESCRIPTION:Dayton Metro Library is pleased to host Ferguson Voices: Disrupting the Frame\, a profound exhibit produced by the University of Dayton Human Rights Center that will be on display through Friday\, August 30\, in the Opportunity Space @ St. Clair at the Main Library. \n  \nIn 2014\, after Michael Brown was shot and killed by police\, a 100-day uprising followed in Ferguson\, Missouri. Ferguson Voices features interviews and photographs of twelve individuals who responded to Brown’s death by showing contributions to their community during the protest – acting\, teaching\, repairing\, and advancing the cause of justice. \n  \nInitially created in 2016\, after nine University of Dayton students traveled to Missouri to interview people who were affected by the unrest of 2014\, Ferguson Voices seeks to humanize the individuals who witnessed and shaped the uprising and to show visitors that when communities are faced with difficult moments\, we all have a role to play. \n  \nA companion program hosted by the University of Dayton Human Rights Center will be held in the Opportunity Space @ St. Clair at 6 pm\, on Tuesday\, August 27. It will involve a panel discussion and provide a space for community members to come together and process the recent killing of 16-year-old Brian Moody by Dayton City Police. \n  \nThis discussion will utilize the exhibit to focus attention on police violence and community response and will re-ignite questions about the use of lethal force\, public trust and accountability\, and over-policing and radical discrimination.
