DESCRIPTION:Dayton Metro Library is launching a new storytime series called Hometown Heroes Family Storytime\, which will be held one Monday a month throughout the year in the Children’s Creativity Space at the Main Library\, from 5:30-6:30 pm. SUMMARY:Hometown Heroes Family Storytime
DESCRIPTION:Dayton Metro Library is launching a new storytime series called Hometown Heroes Family Storytime\, which will be held one Monday a month throughout the year in the Children’s Creativity Space at the Main Library\, from 5:30-6:30 pm. Kids of all ages and caregivers can enjoy fun-filled sessions with books\, songs\, and activities. Each Hometown Heroes session will also have a special guest reader from the Dayton area. Registration is not required. The Hometown Heroes Family Storytime schedule is as follows: \n\nApril 7: Jeffery Mims\, Mayor of the City of Dayton\nMay 5: Dr. David Lawrence\, Dayton Public School District Superintendent\nJune 2: Mr. Moses Mbeseha\, co-founder of The Conscious Connect Community Development Corporation\nJuly 7: Rodney Veal\, an independent choreographer\, interdisciplinary artist\, educator\, and producer\nAugust 18: Willis “Bing” Davis\, an internationally recognized artist\, educator\, and community activist.\nSeptember 8: Jeff Jackson\, co-owner of the Wright Dunbar Cigar Shoppe in Dayton’s Historic Wright Dunbar District\nOctober 6: Michael Carter\, Senior Advisor to the President of Sinclair Community College\nNovember 3: Darius Beckham\, a former senior policy aide to the City of Dayton’s mayor.\nDecember 1: Carl Kennebrew\, International President of the IUE-CWA.\n\nThis Hometown Heroes series is part of DML’s Reading Railroad Initiative\, which aims to link DML’s communities through literacy. The initiative is dedicated to fostering a love of reading and learning for Black boys and young men. It offers storytelling experiences\, curated book selections\, signature events\, and mentorship from community leaders so that patrons are encouraged to view reading as a tool for self-discovery\, empowerment\, and lifelong success. \nAnother aspect of DML’s Reading Railroad Initiative is the Black Men Read–250 in 2025 Community Challenge. DML is calling on Black men across Montgomery County and beyond to inspire the next generation of readers by sharing the joy of storytelling with young children by becoming a “Reading Conductor” volunteer and/or logging their reading. Volunteers can read as a Hometown Hero guest\, at one of DML’s Branches\, to a loved one\, at a school\, out in the community\, etc.\, to spark curiosity\, foster a connection\, and help create a love of reading in DML’s communities. DESCRIPTION:As part of DML’s Social Justice Speaker Series\, Beyond Bullets: A Call for Protection\, Policy\, and Pride\, featuring Brandon Wolf\, will be held in the Main Library’s Eichelberger Forum\, Thursday\, August 7\, 6-7:30 pm\, with a book signing after. \n\nWolf is a national LGBTQ civil rights advocate\, a leader in the movement to end gun violence\, and a survivor of the 2016 Pulse Nightclub shooting\, and he will discuss how gun violence\, policy advocacy\, and LGBTQIA+ rights intersect. \n\nIn addition to his many media and political appearances\, he was the first survivor of the Pulse tragedy to testify before Congress\, and then again about LGBT-related hate violence. Wolf is the founder of The Dru Project and is the National Press Secretary for the Human Rights Campaign. His debut memoir\, titled A Place for Us\, became a bestseller in 2023. \n\nThis program is intended for adults. Registration is not required.

DESCRIPTION:The Community ID is for ANY resident who may have limited access to government-issued forms of identification\, and for those who support a diverse and inclusive community. It is not a government-issued form of ID or a driver’s license\, but it is a verifiable form of identification that says you are a part of our community. It can be used as a tool by law enforcement\, city agencies\, health centers\, schools\, and businesses to better identify\, serve\, and protect you. \n  \nAttendees must participate in Orientation to receive ID. By honoring the original caretakers of the land and inviting them into the Library’s space\, knowledge and experiences will be shared.
