SUMMARY:Toubab Krewe
DESCRIPTION:Some music cannot be found on a map or within iTunes categories. Some music is so original it seems snatched from the great\, invisible substrata that runs below all human activity\, a sound aching to be born without a flag or fixed allegiance – free\, questing\, overflowing with immediate\, tangible life. This is the music of Toubab Krewe\, the vibrant instrumental powerhouse that creates a sonic Pangaea that lustily swirls together rock\, African traditions\, jam sensibilities\, international folk strains and more. While nearly impossible to put into any box\, it takes only a few moments to realize in a very palpable way that one is face-to-face with a true original who recognizes no borders in a march towards a muscular\, original\, globally switched-on sound. \nFormed in 2005\, Toubab Krewe has tenaciously honed their craft through relentless touring and a fierce dedication to carving out something they can truly call their own. The fruits of this hard work can be heard on their latest release\, STYLO\, (March 2nd\, 2018). What Justin Perkins (Kora\, Kamelngoni\, guitar\, percussion)\, Terrence Houston (drumset)\, Drew Heller (guitar\, organ)\, Justin Kimmel (bass\, keys)\, and Luke Quaranta (Djembe\, Congas\, Dundun\, Sangban\, Kinkini) have wrought on STYLO reflects the many miles and musical journeys that have transpired since their last studio album\, TK2. \nThis is a band that actively draws inspiration from whatever source floats into their purview\, something they’ve exhibited in their decade and a half of heavy gigging\, including regular appearances at major U.S. festivals like Bonnaroo\, High Sierra\, Rothbury and Wakarusa\, and abroad at such legendary gatherings as the Festival In The Desert in Essakane\, Mali. Whether on their own or collaborating with luminaries like the Last Poets’ Umar Bin Hassan or Uncle Earl’s Rayna Gellert\, Toubab Krewe has already earned the attention and respect of a broad musical community. \nToubab carries echoes of African greats like Ali Farka Toure\, Orchestra Baobab and Salif Keita\, no doubt picked up during the group’s travels to study and live in Guinea\, Ivory Coast and Mali. But what truly differentiates Toubab Krewe from other Statesiders inspired by African music is how they innovate on what they’ve learned instead of simply recreating tradition. Toubab Krewe carves out a new trail honoring the African originators they admire by making something alive and contemporary.

SUMMARY:Alanna Royale
DESCRIPTION:Laugh out loud funny and fearlessly outspoken\, one doesn’t have to wonder if Alanna Royale is in the room. Since storming the Nashville scene in 2013\, Royale has repeatedly made her presence known from calling out politicians she can’t stand to calling monopoly on her classically minded\, R&B sound. In her first year alone\, the artist landed headlining slots at Nashville Pride Fest and won “Road to Bonnaroo” with only an EP under her belt. After fine tuning her swagger fronting punk bands\, it appeared Royale had found her perfect niche marrying soul and pop. Or so she thought.

SUMMARY:World Indigenous Day Celebration ft. Digging Roots w/ Topknot opening
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate World Indigenous Day with two incredible Indigenous bands and opening remarks by members of our local Indigenous communities. \nDigging Roots breathe life into songs from their land\, Turtle Island\, to raise their voices in solidarity with a global chorus of Indigenous artists\, activists and change-makers. \nFor over a decade\, two-time JUNO Award winners Digging Roots have traveled the world with a joyful message of resistance\, celebrating Anishinaabe and Onkwehón:we traditions of round dance and interconnectedness. As Roots Music Canada says\, the band is “…badass\, empowering and hopeful all at the same time.” \nDigging Roots takes you on a journey through tall grass\, sweet waters and unconditional love in a joyous and powerful celebration on their 4th album Zhawenim (2022). Led by the electrifying current of husband-and-wife team\, ShoShona Kish and Raven Kanatakta\, the 6-piece band responds to a majestic and spiritual call from ShoShona’s earthy vocals and Raven’s exhilarating guitar mastery through a fusion of blues\, soul and rock n’roll. For long time fans or new audiences\, their constantly evolving live show opens a space\, wherever they may be in the world\, for healing\, compassion\, unconditional love and Baamaadziwin (the good life). Constantly interweaving between drum culture and guitar dialects\, Raven and ShoShona were raised in cultural families that have continued to resist oppression and colonialism. \nMore than a band\, Digging Roots have taken their place at the frontline of the fight for equity and representation in the arts\, with involvement in industry advocacy and organization to empower arts communities worldwide. ShoShona is the founder of the International Indigenous Music Summit and the music label Ishkōdé Records. \nRaven\, who studied at Berklee College of Music\, “grew up in a small Anishinabe Rez called Winneway in north-western Quebec. It’s formally called Long Point First Nation. It’s where my grandfather and father taught me to hunt\, trap and fish. I also spent my summers on my mother’s Mohawk Rez of Kahnàwa:ke.” ShoShona’s “family is from Batchewana and a part of the Three Fires Midewiwin Lodge.” \nTopKnotTopKnot concert\nTrenton Wheeler produces and performs under the stage name Topknot (short for his tribal given name Owl Topknot Feather)\, combining influences of 80s synth-pop & rock with twangy guitars and cinematic climaxes reminiscent of a spaghetti western soundtrack. Honoring his Blackfeet/Métis heritage\, Trenton continues the tradition of Northern Plains grassing and regularly hosts educational enrichment programs and speaking events. He is an advocate for Indigenous peoples and has served on the board of directors for the Native American Indian Association of Tennessee.

SUMMARY:Blair Crimmins & the Hookers
DESCRIPTION:Blair Crimmins began his current music career in Atlanta\, Georgia\, with a drive to bring Ragtime and 1920’s style Dixieland Jazz to new audiences. While playing small rock clubs around the Southeast he developed a sound that is at once modern while being deeply rooted in the past. He has toured the U.S and Italy playing festivals and has opened for acts such as Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Old Crow Medicine show. A multiinstrumentalist on guitar\, banjo and piano\, Crimmins writes songs and arrangements for a classic New Orleans style horn section consisting of trumpet\, clarinet and trombone. His debut release “The Musical Stylings Of” became a college radio sensation on WRAS Atlanta making him the most requested band on the air. In 2012 Crimmins showed his musical diversity by writing and recording the full score for the independent short film “Old Man Cabbage”. The following year\, Crimmins was the critics pick for Best Song Writer of 2013 in Creative Loafing’s Best of ATL issue. His next album entitled Sing-a-longs! earned him a nomination at The Georgia Music Awards for Best Jazz Artist. After years of relentless touring the country and abroad Blair Crimmins released his 4th album of original ragtime music You Gotta Sell Something (2017)\, as well as a children’s album All Aboard (2019) and a 5th full length record featuring swinging covers of his favorite artists ranging from Louis Armstrong to David Bowie entitled “Okay Boom!” in 2021.

SUMMARY:Ruthie Foster
DESCRIPTION:Ruthie Foster’s ninth studio album represents a new high water mark for the veteran blues artist—a collection of songs possessing pure power\, like a tidal wave of musical generosity. Healing Time finds Foster pushing her boundaries as a singer and songwriter more than ever before\, creating a truly live-sounding atmosphere with the help of her band\, who sound refreshingly loose and lived-in throughout these 12 songs. We’ve all been in need of some healing in recent times\, and Foster’s latest provides a guide for how to move through the world with equal parts compassion and resolve. \nHealing Time is the latest jewel in Foster’s accomplished career\, which includes multiple Grammy nominations and collaborations with fellow luminaries like Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks. For her latest\, Foster contributed more to the writing process than she had on any of her previous albums\, effectively refining her own songcraft in the process. “With this album\, I dug deep and tried to go for the best way to write\,” she explains. “This album says a lot about the period we were making it in\, and how I wanted to find my way out of it.” \nWork on the album began in lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020\, as Foster enlisted previous collaborators like Gary Nicholson and Grace Pettis to pitch in during the writing process—as well as every member of her band. “I wanted my band involved in the entire process of this album\,” she explains\, and they also played a large role in recreating the sound that Foster had become drawn to after spending time with her vinyl collection. “I was aiming to keep these songs sounding like they came from that era\, which says a lot about where I am in my life\, too.” \nVeteran producer Mark Howard (Willie Nelson\, Lucinda Williams) came in to bring new ideas to Foster’s table as recording began at Studio 71 West in Austin\, TX\, New Orleans’ famed Esplanade Studios\, and Blue Rock Studio in Wimberley\, TX. “Mark’s ability to turn a song’s arrangement upside down was intriguing and sometimes challenging for me\,” she states. “It was a lot to wrap my head around\, but he made me think outside of the box I didn’t even know I was in.” \nProducer Dan Barrett\, who also worked with Foster on 2017’s Joy Comes Back\, then took the helm at Black Pumas co-bandleader Adrian Quesada’s famed Electric Deluxe studio in Austin. Along with several Black Pumas members\, Barrett brought in a collection of Austin’s finest backing musicians\, like Glenn Fukunaga (The Chicks\, Shawn Colvin). “With Dan onboard we were able to find the glue to these songs sonically\, and he brilliantly melded my familiar Texas blues-Americana sound with what Mark pulled out of me in New Orleans\,” Foster says. “This combination gave these songs a breath of fresh air\, and it all came together very organically.” \nHealing Time’s title—as well as its burst-of-sunshine title track\, which features pedal steel legend Robert Randolph—is a reference not only to the trials many have faced over the last several years\, but also the necessity of what Foster does as an artist. “I hear fans tell me that the music we make is very spiritually healing\,” she says. “The experience of dealing with my own grief after losing a band member a year before the pandemic while navigating around zoom school with my daughter and trying to figure out what to do with myself was tough but necessary. When I look at it as a whole it was all very healing for me which is pretty much how I try to live my life. There’s always time for healing\, if you give it time.” \nAnd Healing Time is ultimately a work that explores such extremes as being human often brings to the surface\, reminding listeners that even when we feel like we’re at the top\, we’re ultimately still finding our way—a beautiful reflection of the essence of living itself.

Nashville’s Music City Roots says Scythian is ‘what happens when rock star charisma meets Celtic dervish fiddling’\, and the Washington Post claims “Scythian’s enthusiasm is contagious\, and shows seem to end with everyone dancing\, jumping around or hoisting glasses.” The foursome made up of Alexander Fedoryka (Vocals\, Fiddle\, Mandolin\, Harmonica)\, Danylo Fedoryka (Vocals\, Guitar\, Accordion)\, Ethan Dean (Vocals\, Upright and Electric Bass\, Percussion\, Guitar) and Johnny Rees (Vocals\, Drums\, Percussion) brings various influences together to create a conglomerate which is technically precise and steeped in various folk traditions: The classically trained Fedoryka brothers grew up on Ukrainian folk music and bluegrass\, while Ethan Dean was raised on the greats of 60’s & 70’s folk-rock. Lafayette LA raised Johnny Rees brings a Cajun backbeat to the Celtic-Americana fusion giving Scythian yet another dimension which keeps audiences entertained and moving. Scythian is coming off its most prolific year in 2020 with over 1\,000 hours of live streams during the Covid Lockdowns\, release of two new albums (Roots & Stones and Quaranstream: The Album) and four new music videos. You have to catch the live show to understand why The Cammel City Dispatch said of their Merlefest performance: “[Scythian gives] no quarter in their quest to entertain and bring a joy to their music that gives it an irony-free\, wide open feel of manic possibility. The playing is technically brilliant\, but it is the energy that carries the day.”

For the past 20 years\, the multi-talented composer\, pianist and keyboardist manifested these inspirations – and helped bring the legacies of these legendary bands forward – as a former member of the popular and prolific\, constantly gigging Columbus-based R&B/jazz ensemble NexLevel. \nIn addition to releasing two full length albums and multiple singles\, the band has performed and shared stages with everyone from Boys II Men\, Fourplay and Spyro Gyra to Mindi Abair\, Warren Hill\, Tim Bowman and late greats Jeff Golub and Wayman Tisdale. Thompson’s success with NexLevel has led to a multitude of opportunities to perform and tour regularly with genre greats Eric Darius\, Adam Hawley\, Althea Rene\, Paul Taylor and the late Nick Colionne. He also appears on saxophonist Jeanette Harris’ latest album Saxathrone.

SUMMARY:John Jorgenson Bluegrass Band (J2B2)
DESCRIPTION:J2B2 is an all-star bluegrass supergroup featuring four legendary\, award-winning musicians – John Jorgenson on acoustic guitar\, mandolin and vocals; Herb Pedersen on banjo\, acoustic guitar and vocals; Mark Fain on bass; and Patrick Sauber on acoustic guitar and vocals – delivering bluegrass like no one has ever heard it before. The band’s undeniable live shows have received stellar reviews and have the bluegrass world buzzing. The four combine forces to form a spot-on union of impeccable musicianship\, incomparable songwriting\, incredible harmony vocals (a fresh twist combining bluegrass with elements of West Coast folk rock) and seasoned showmanship. This is the “high lonesome sound” of American roots music at its finest. \nJorgenson and Pedersen are founders (with Chris Hillman) of the formative country rock group Desert Rose Band. After working as a freelance musician in Southern California\, Jorgenson met Hillman and soon formed the Desert Rose Band. In 1990\, Jorgenson went on to found the Hellecasters and toured with Elton John’s band for six years. Artists ranging from Barbra Streisand to Bonnie Raitt to Earl Scruggs have sought out Jorgenson’s guitar work. Jorgenson portrayed Django Reinhardt in the Hollywood feature film Head in the Clouds. In 2008\, Jorgenson won a Grammy for Best Country Instrumental with Brad Paisley and was nominated for Best Bluegrass Album with Earl Scruggs. \nHerb Pedersen was a member of legendary bluegrass band The Dillards as well as bluegrass super-group Old and In the Way. A sought-after singer and musician\, he has worked with such music legends as Chris Hillman\, Earl Scruggs\, Gram Parsons\, Emmylou Harris\, Tony Rice\, Dan Fogelberg\, Stephen Stills\, Linda Ronstadt\, Kris Kristofferson\, John Prine\, Jackson Browne and John Denver. \nMark Fain toured and recorded as bass player for Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder for 13 years. He’s toured and recorded with the Dixie Chicks\, Alan Jackson\, Travis Tritt\, Dwight Yoakam\, Allison Krauss and Dolly Parton\, as well as producing many artists in jazz\, country\, bluegrass and gospel genres. \nPatrick Sauber is a multi-instrumentalist who has quickly made a name for himself in the world of bluegrass and old time music. Equally adept on guitar\, mandolin and banjo\, Sauber has toured with Peter Rowan and Laurie Lewis and appeared on screen in “The Mighty Wind.” \nJ2B2’s debut album\, From The Crow’s Nest\, was recorded in Sheryl Crow’s home barn studio in Nashville\, Tennessee. The album was recently released as part of a John Jorgenson limited edition\, 3-CD box set called DIVERTUOSO (Cleopatra Records)\, which has received vast critical acclaim. DIVERTUOSO includes three new distinct albums by Jorgenson: J2B2 – From The Crow’s Nest; John Jorgenson Quintet – Returning (gypsy jazz); and John Jorgenson – Gifts From The Flood(instrumental electric guitar). \nIn addition to recording their first album as a group\, J2B2 has played several major tour dates over the course of the past two and a half years\, including tours of Norway and the UK\, performances at the annual RockyGrass Festival in Lyons\, Colorado; the Joe Val Festival in Framingham\, Massachusetts; and headlining the Guitar Town Festival in Copper Mountain\, Colorado\, three years in a row. J2B2 made its Grand Ole Opry debut in October 2013 and has returned several times to the Opry since. J2B2 has created quite a buzz\, and The International Bluegrass Music Association is among the many giving the newly formed band’s live performance high marks. In a review\, the IBMA noted\, “There was warmth\, and storytelling\, and lots of laughter as this fresh band of legends made their debut…but with their expertise combined\, you would think they had been playing in this configuration for years.” \nYes! Weekly in Greensboro\, NC has noted of J2B2: “Expect fireworks and amazing playing from some of the best string players in the world.”

SUMMARY:Buffalo Nichols
DESCRIPTION:On his second album\, The Fatalist\, Carl “Buffalo” Nichols does things with the blues that might catch you off guard. There’s 808 programming\, chopped up Charley Patton samples\, washes of synth. There’s a consideration of the fullness of the sonic stage and the atmospherics of the music that can only come with a long engagement with electronic music. But this is no gimmicky hybrid or attempt to turn the blues into 21st century music by simply dressing it with skittering hi-hats. Nichols’ vision for the blues is of a form of music that’s intimately tied to everyday life in 2024\, something that’s reflected not only in the choice of instrumentation\, but in the complexities of the songwriting and the gray areas his lyrics explore. This is music that comes straight from the present\, and as such\, it’s a reminder that the same shit that drove the first blues singers to pick up a guitar is still present behind the throbs of deep bass hits today. The Fatalist sounds unlike any blues record you’re likely to hear in 2024.

SUMMARY:Nikki Hill w/ Gem Series Opener The Café Unit
DESCRIPTION:Nikki Hill is sweet seduction\, sweeter threat\, and smoldering energy. An original force in American music\, she is tender and tough\, flamboyant\, witty and dangerous. To put it plainly\, Hill brings daggers back to the stage and studio. Overlapping soulful\, sensual and bold vocal tones with powerful chrome-plated riffs and swagger\, her voice finds a home in it – a soul singing\, bar rocking\, roots revivalist\, that writes with frank self-reflection at a dancing tempo. \nHailing from Durham\, North Carolina\, Nikki Hill enjoyed R&B\, soul\, pop and hip hop at home. In addition\, she sang gospel in the church choir from childhood through her early teenage years. Gradually\, she developed her ears for garage rock\, rock n’ roll\, blues and roots\, while also picking up influence from living along the legendary Mississippi River – in St. Louis\, Missouri\, New Orleans\, Louisiana\, and currently Memphis\, Tennessee. In Nikki’s mind\, a fertile mix of all the different types of music she had heard arose\, and gradually these merged into something quite special\, as she found her own voice\, which the world was gradually introduced to on her many constant tours\, where she took more and more audiences by storm with her distinctive vocals and energetic stage performance. \nAfter self-releasing and producing her debut album\, Here’s Nikki Hill\, her musical contributions continued\, with her song “Struttin’” released on Deke Dickerson and The Bo-Keys Soul Meets Country EP\, produced by Scott Bomar in Memphis\, TN. The momentum continued through the release of her second album\, Heavy Hearts Hard Fists\, recorded at Fort Horton Studios in Wyldwood\, TX. The acclaimed album was accompanied by a worldwide tour in the US\, Europe\, Australia\, India and Morocco\, and over 30 festivals\, including Montreux Jazz Festival\, Monterey Jazz Festival\, and Byron Bay Blues Festival\, receiving praise for uplifting the new songs with an erupting live performance. \n“Think Tina Turner fronting AC/DC and you’ll have half of the picture. She’s a machine…you’ve got no excuse if you miss seeing her… Nikki Hill is a revelation\, her band masters of rocket-fueled bluesy swing\, her voice the beacon which calls you home… a vocal powerhouse who don’t mess around.” (Rolling Stone). \nHill’s current touring band is Matt Hill (guitar)\, Laura Chavez (guitar)\, Nick Gaitan (bass)\, and Marty Dodson (drums). On Nikki Hill’s third self-produced and self-released album\, Feline Roots\, she lets her soul rip. Nikki and her band take a muscular groove — celebrating and wailing over love\, transgressions\, the hard times\, and wild freedom — and inject it with timeless effect\, giving Nikki a foundation on which to build. \nIt’s her version of rock n’ roll that can only come from her stories. Nikki Hill has never been afraid to take the road less traveled\, and it’s clear with “Feline Roots” that she’s living every word. \n \nProjects Unlimited Gem Series Opener: The Café Unit\nThe Café Unit is a group of “Seasoned Players” who share a common vision\, influence\, and ear for live performance and music. The Café Unit is laid back AND The Café Unit is upbeat. Ideal for any Dancing\, Good Listening\, Party environment\, Venues Large and Small\, the Band incorporates songs and styles from a variety of genres and eras. Blues\, Rock\, Country\, from Golden Oldies to Present Day Music\, Nothing Is Off The Table
