Furniture\, paintings\, sculpture\, mosaics\, books\, posters\, prints\, lamps\, glass art and more highlight the innovative ways artists made harmonious visual arrangements. The DAI is the exclusive Ohio venue for this major traveling exhibition.

DESCRIPTION:Our artist-led workshops are designed to make community connections between our guests\, local artists\, and The Dayton Art Institute through conversation and artmaking. Flourish and Flow: An Oil Painting Journey Date: Thursdays\, April 10\, 17 and 24\, and May 1 and 8 – 5:30–7:30 p.m Cost: $100 for museum members; $125 for non-members Ages: 18+ In this multi-session workshop series\, local artist Jamaal Durr leads participants through an exploration of the fundamentals of oil painting. Sessions will focus on layering\, blending\, and texture while developing skills through the creation of personalized artwork featuring birth flowers. Jamaal Durr\, a Contemporary Artist\, is recognized for his figurative works that intimately blend reality and the surreal. Using materials like oil paint\, charcoal\, and graphite\, he explores themes of identity and self-reflection through his timely narratives. Jamaal has expanded his capacity within the realm of Art\, having also gained experience as a Curator\, Teacher\, and Muralist. Jamaal is primarily self-taught\, having only received a couple of years of formal training at Stivers School for the Arts in Dayton\, OH and a brief stint studying architecture at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn\, NY.

We are excited to bring this longstanding sport to the Dayton Art Institute’s Oktoberfest as an official U.S. Steinholding Association qualifying event! Oktoberfest kicks off on September 26 with a Lederhosen Lunch (11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.) and the Preview Party (7 to 11 p.m.) Then it’s two full days of Oktoberfest fun\, from noon to 11 p.m. on Saturday\, September 27 and noon to 7 p.m. on Sunday\, September 28! Tickets go on sale August 6. Remember to bring your ID with you to check-in at the gate. Ohio liquor laws require us to wristband all patrons over the age of 21\, regardless of their intended beverage consumption. Check back often on the DAI Octoberfest website for updates!

DESCRIPTION:The annual Oktoberfest Preview Party takes place on the Friday of Oktoberfest weekend\, 7-11 p.m. Oktoberfest includes a fully covered Main Stage area and Food Court\, plus a TV Tent with four big-screen TVs for all the weekend sports action. Live music is featured on two stages throughout the weekend: traditional German music in the Food Court and a variety of bands on the Main Stage. The Oktoberfest Artisans will return in 2025\, offering a wide range of unique items for sale. Tickets go on sale August 6. Advance tickets: $55 museum members; $75 non-members All tickets purchased after 4 p.m. on September 26 are $95.

DESCRIPTION:The Oktoberfest celebration begins with the Lederhosen Lunch from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Admission to the festival grounds is free (the only free admission of the weekend!) for this special community lunch\, hosted by the DAI’s Former Associate Board (FAB). A variety of foods are available for purchase\, including brats\, metts\, schnitzel sandwiches\, German salads\, homemade noodles\, and beverages. The main beer truck will be tapped for the Lederhosen Lunch\, offering the first Oktoberfest beer of the weekend! Lederhosen Lunch also features live music and the opportunity to purchase Oktoberfest tickets\, mugs and t-shirts. Sessions will focus on layering\, blending\, and texture while developing skills through the creation of personalized artwork featuring birth flowers. Jamaal Durr\, a Contemporary Artist\, is recognized for his figurative works that intimately blend reality and the surreal. Using materials like oil paint\, charcoal\, and graphite\, he explores themes of identity and self-reflection through his timely narratives. Jamaal has expanded his capacity within the realm of Art\, having also gained experience as a Curator\, Teacher\, and Muralist. DESCRIPTION:Curtis Barnes\, Sr.\, Dayton Icon\nJuly 12–September 14\, 2025 \nA painter and educator\, Curtis Barnes\, Sr. was a longtime fixture of Dayton’s art scene. His bold\, colorful\, experimental paintings are a distinctive blend of naturalism and abstraction. They frequently include self-portraits and portraiture depicting the people in his life. His influence is still felt today among his students and in the African American Visual Arts Guild\, which he co-founded with artist “Bing” Davis in 1992.  He was recognized for his artistic contribution and presented with the “Paul Laurence Dunbar Humanitarian Award” in 1994 and the “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the Ohio Arts Council in 2008. \nThis exhibition comes on the 90th anniversary of his birth and is a celebration of Barnes’ life and art. A DAI exclusive\, this collection of works was drawn from his family and friends.
