His bold\, colorful\, experimental paintings are a distinctive blend of naturalism and abstraction. They frequently include self-portraits and portraiture depicting the people in his life. His influence is still felt today among his students and in the African American Visual Arts Guild\, which he co-founded with artist “Bing” Davis in 1992.  He was recognized for his artistic contribution and presented with the “Paul Laurence Dunbar Humanitarian Award” in 1994 and the “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the Ohio Arts Council in 2008. \nThis exhibition comes on the 90th anniversary of his birth and is a celebration of Barnes’ life and art. DESCRIPTION:Our artist-led workshops are designed to make community connections between our guests\, local artists\, and the Dayton Art Institute through conversation and artmaking. Participants will explore the art of capturing human expression and emotion through charcoal. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced artist\, this series is designed to guide you through the fundamentals and advanced techniques of portraiture. Over the course of several sessions\, you’ll learn how to sketch and shade the human face\, focusing on proportion\, light and shadow to bring your portraits to life. Each participant receives their own personal drawing kit to keep following the workshops. Jamaal Durr\, a Contemporary Artist\, is recognized for his figurative works that intimately blend reality and the surreal. Using materials like oil paint\, charcoal\, and graphite\, he explores themes of identity and self-reflection through his timely narratives. Jamaal has expanded his capacity within the realm of Art\, having also gained experience as a Curator\, Teacher\, and Muralist. Jamaal is primarily self-taught\, having only received a couple of years of formal training at Stivers School for the Arts in Dayton\, OH and a brief stint studying architecture at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn\, NY.  $150 for museum members; $175 for non-members (18+).

Participants will explore the art of capturing human expression and emotion through charcoal. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced artist\, this series is designed to guide you through the fundamentals and advanced techniques of portraiture. Over the course of several sessions\, you’ll learn how to sketch and shade the human face\, focusing on proportion\, light and shadow to bring your portraits to life. Each participant receives their own personal drawing kit to keep following the workshops. Jamaal Durr\, a Contemporary Artist\, is recognized for his figurative works that intimately blend reality and the surreal. Using materials like oil paint\, charcoal\, and graphite\, he explores themes of identity and self-reflection through his timely narratives. Jamaal has expanded his capacity within the realm of Art\, having also gained experience as a Curator\, Teacher\, and Muralist. Jamaal is primarily self-taught\, having only received a couple of years of formal training at Stivers School for the Arts in Dayton\, OH and a brief stint studying architecture at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn\, NY.  $150 for museum members; $175 for non-members (18+).
