Tell us a bit about yourself and your business. What made you decide to open your own small business and how long have you been in operation?
Donut & More is a small downtown shop on Wilkinson Street. In addition to serving donuts, the shop carries snacks, fresh fruit, drinks, sandwiches, and other staples.
Owners Jung H. Kim (Julie) and Kwang Y. Kim (Dr. Kim) told us they came to America for more education in 1968. They landed in Dayton for research in aerospace science, and ended up working at Donut & More while serving as an adjunct professor of chemistry at Sinclair Community College.
They’ve been operating Donut & More since 1992.
What do you enjoy about working in downtown Dayton?
The owners told us they like working downtown because of the people. They are really missing their customers lately, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Tell us something about you or your business that may surprise people to learn.
They told us they came to the United States with just $100, which was the maximum allowed by the Korean government, and have endured all kinds of discrimination and been denied privileges extended to others. Despite all that, they still say this is the best country in the world.
Additionally, they say they consider Donut & More to be one of the most reliable Dayton businesses, as they have been here for more than 28 years now.
How is your business coping with the pandemic and how can people support you now?
The owners say that the coronavirus has hit them hard and is killing business. With so many people working from home now, business has declined sharply. They hope we will soon return to face-to-face work and they’ll see their customers return. They did say that the relief funds they’ve been able to apply for have been great, and they are thankful for the help from Montgomery County and the Downtown Dayton Partnership.
