Born a Slave, with the Soul of a Free Man
How did enslaved people in Saint-Domingue (now Haiti) rise up in 1791, challenge the European and American slavetocracy, defeat Spain, England, and France, and become the first Black Republic in the World? The story of the Haitian War for Independence, as depicted in Col. Charles Young’s Shakespearean-level drama, is the greatest story in Black world history that you’ve never heard. This 100+ year-old play has never been published or performed. Until now.
Join Theatre MADE on August 12-13, 3:00 PM, at the PNC Arts Annex for our staged reading of “Toussaint Louverture, a Negro History Drama.” Directed by UD Professor Michelle Hayford, performed by American- and Haitian-born actors/readers, with dance, music, and featuring artist Benjamin Baugham–who will create an original work during the performance for auction afterwards–this is a staged reading like you’ve never experienced before. Join us to learn, enjoy, and be part of this history-making event.
