Dayton Metro Library’s next guest in its Social Justice Speaker Series is Dr. Lauron Kehrer. SJSS: Queer Voices in Hip Hop will be held on Thursday, October 5, from 6-8 pm, in the Main Library’s Bassani Theater Off Third, 3rd Floor.
Comprised of award-winning speakers providing insights from their professional fields and personal journeys, the Series addresses some of the most critical social justice issues of today. In their program, Dr. Kehrer will discuss and explore Queer voices in Hip Hop music, as reflected in their book, Queer Voices in Hip Hop: Cultures, Communities, and Contemporary Performance (University of Michigan Press, 2022), which specifically focuses on Black queer and trans artists in Hip Hop.
Dr. Kehrer is an Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology and Musicology in the School of Music at Western Michigan University. They teach courses in popular and global music cultures and western art music. Dr. Kehrer’s research focuses on where race, gender, and sexuality intersect with popular American music genres – especially Hip Hop.
This program is in conjunction with DML’s 50th Anniversary of Hip Hop programing and is co-sponsored by the University of Dayton’s Music Department. Adults and teens are welcome. Registration is not required.
Additional information about Dr. Kehrer, including publications their work has appeared in, and the Social Justice Speaker Series can be found at DaytonMetroLibrary.org/SocialJustice. Additional questions may also be direct to the Library’s Ask Me Line at 937.463.2665.
