Mike ColvinFast Facts

Officers with the Dayton Police Department say that Downtown Dayton has seen double-digit decreases in almost all crime categories. Major Brian Johns tells Dayton 24/7 Now that there’s been a 35% decrease in violent crime, 24% decrease in property crime, and 26% decrease in drug and narcotic crime downtown since the COVID-19 pandemic. Major Johns says he believes a number of factors have contributed to the improvement.

“Some of the things Dayton Police Department has been doing is forming a Strategic Response Unit. They’re a group of 10 officers who focus on crime areas… east, west, it can even be downtown, where crimes are occurring to decrease those crimes,” said Johns. “We have full-time bike patrols downtown now. Our Real Time Crime Center…has been very instrumental.”
