The “Seed of Life” team of local artists who will create the 8/4 Memorial are inviting volunteers to help them build the mosaic that will become part of the memorial. Dayton Metro Library is hosting a volunteer event this Thursday, February 29, starting at 7 p.m. for community members to contribute to the piece. Volunteers are invited to place colorful mosaic tiles into overlapping circles to create the seed of life shape for the memorial. Additional volunteer events are expected to continue each Thursday through March.

The Seed of Life team is made up of architect and sculptor Terry Welker, mosaicist Jes McMillan, poet and educator Sierra Leone, and artist James Pate. All members of the team work locally and describe themselves as community builders. The team was chosen to create the mural after a nationwide call for artists. The team has a budget of $200,000 to complete the memorial, which is expected to be finished by August 4, 2024, the fifth anniversary of the tragic events in the Oregon District. More information about the team and its design is available at 8-4memorial.com.
