An event every day that begins at 12:00 am, repeating until Sunday, November 19, 2023
Dayton Metro Library will host Life in Letters: A Typographic Poster Exhibition Featuring Paul Laurence Dunbar, a community-based, experiential-learning exhibit courtesy of graphic design students from the University of Dayton’s Department of Art + Design. It will be on display in the Main Library’s Opportunity Space at St. Clair through Sunday, November 19.
Typography Two students, led by Professor Misty Thomas-Trout, learned about the struggles and experiences of Dunbar through stories told in a series of his personal letters. Using the letters, the students were asked to choose typefaces that celebrate and honor the inclusivity and diversity of Dunbar’s life – thus creating two-sided posters that visualize the letters that were written and received by Dunbar. By using the discipline of graphic design, the exhibit informs, educates, inspires, and documents Dunbar’s legacy.
Community members are also invited to a celebratory reception on Friday, November 17, 4-6 pm. Life in Letters is sponsored by DML; the College of Arts & Sciences, UD’s Department of Art + Design; and UD’s Office of Experimental Learning.
