Dayton Metro Library will launch its National Endowment for the Arts Big Read program exploring Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi with a NEA Big Read Kick-Off Celebration on Wednesday, September 18, 5:30-7:30 pm, in the Main Library’s Eichelberger Forum. The NEA Big Read Dayton is presented in partnership with the Fitz Center for Leadership in Community at the University of Dayton, Daybreak Dayton, the Paul Laurence Dunbar House, the African American Visual Artists Guild (AAVAG), and other community partners, with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
The NEA Big Read Kick-Off Celebration will feature dialogues between Dr. ShaDawn Battle and Dr. Nancy McHugh and a cultural experience with food curated from London Coe of Peace on Fifth. Complimentary copies of Homegoing will be available, and patrons will have the opportunity to meet and mingle with community members and partners.
“DML is excited to not only be a part of this community-wide event as a partner, but to have our Branches host book club meetings and other events in the coming months,” states Claudine Bennett, DML’s External Relations Manager. “By exploring the theme of ‘Where We Live,’ patrons all over the Dayton area will be able to engage with and reflect on Homegoing in a variety of ways that will leave a lasting impression.”
An initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest, the NEA Big Read broadens our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the power of a shared reading experience.
Dayton is one of 62 communities nationwide participating in the 2024-2025 NEA Big Read. From Wednesday, September 18, our community will celebrate Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi with a full calendar of events including
book club discussions of the book at five Branch locations, a Human Race Theater Creative Writing Workshop, visual art exhibitions, public presentations, art education workshops, and a panel discussion.
