Tell us a bit about yourself and your business.
We’re Demetrius Wright and Joey Williams of 1Eleven Flavor House. 1Eleven Flavor House focuses on comfort and Caribbean foods. We emphasize flavorful food and positive vibes – you’ll notice the colors and Caribbean feel, and the colors look ocean-like. We want customers to feel like they are on a getaway. The music is often Caribbean at lunchtime in addition to the the decor and food. We want people to enjoy themselves and have good time.
What made you decide to open your own small business and how long have you been in operation?
We saw a need for a restaurant that would offer the community something different. We are an African American-owned business offering a multicultural experience. We began with just lunch service following our soft opening in January, and later added dinner service as well. The concept for the business is in the name – everything from the food to the decor to the music represents flavor.
What do you enjoy about working in downtown Dayton?
Having worked in downtown for many years, we’ve always enjoyed the atmosphere here. We like that you see people from all over the community. We’re very excited to be a new restaurant in downtown Dayton. There has been so much recent growth and we are excited to be part of it. We appreciate all the new residential properties, the Schuster Center, The Arcade, and other amenities, and we are very hopeful we can be a nice addition to downtown.
Tell us something about your business that may surprise people to learn.
People would be surprised to see how comfortable it is in here and how we decorated the space. We put a lot of time into the construction, and Demetrius did 90% of the rebuild. We hope customers are proud to bring out of town guests to a local independent restaurant in downtown Dayton.
How is your business coping with the pandemic and how can people support you now?
The opening process took longer than expected due to COVID-19, and it was harder to find employees and contractors, but we’re doing okay. We’d love for you to come down and give us a try.
