Tell us a bit about yourself and your business.
For over 40 years, Feathers Vintage Clothing and Antiques has been a mainstay of downtown Dayton’s Oregon District. Buying and selling men’s and women’s vintage clothing, and costume jewelry and accessories, as well as vintage and antique art, books, housewares, and a small selection of new reproduction antique items, we carry items from roughly the 1920s to the 1990s! We also have a large selection of vintage vinyl records of all genres and artists.
What made you decide to open your own small business and how long have you been in operation?
We enjoy the act of thrifting, picking, shopping, whatever you want to call it to find our merchandise. Our store has more stuff than we have room for and our stock changes daily. If you or someone you know likes to hunt or dig for old stuff you wont find on Amazon or at Target, come see us !
We were huge clothing and antique lovers, as well as fans of local history, when we (Janet Phillips and her husband William) first opened the shop in 1978. The shop is now run by our son Aaron.
What do you enjoy about working in downtown Dayton?
We love the fact that it is never boring! Downtown is full of stuff and characters you wont see in the suburbs!
Tell us something about your business that may surprise people to learn.
People might be surprised to know that we are the oldest continually operating female run business in the Oregon District for sure, and perhaps in all of downtown Dayton.
How is your business coping with the pandemic and how can people support you now?
We’ve limited our hours some to deal with the pandemic. We’re only open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays 12-8 for the time being. And, Janet won’t physically be in the shop as much due to health risks, but rest assured: she’s bringing new loads of stuff out of storage to put out nearly every day! We want to thank each and every person who comes downtown, comes to the Oregon District, and comes in our doors and patronizes all our wonderful business neighbors!
