Tell us a bit about yourself and your business. What made you decide to open your own small business and how long have you been in operation?
Twist Cupcakery started about 8 years ago when I started baking for my children’s birthday parties where friends and family started to place orders, and one order turned into two and more, and before I knew it I had a licensed home bakery while working a full time job as an engineer. I followed the Pop-Up Shop program through the Downtown Dayton Partnership for years, and I knew that if I were to ever open an actual store front location it would be through this program. In 2015, my husband and I decided to take the plunge and we applied for and were accepted into the program with an initial lease term of 6 months, and we are proud to be still here over 5 years later.
What do you enjoy about working in downtown Dayton?
I love the vibrancy of downtown. Prior to covid there were so many activities happening and people buzzing in and around the area. Aside from the significant decrease in business due to the pandemic, the community is still amazing us at how they have supported our curbside cupcake pick up and our nationwide shipping options!
Tell us something about your business that may surprise people to learn.
One thing that people always ask is do I have any formal training… the answer is no. I learned everything that I know about cake decorating from YouTube and trial and error! Each time I am able to create I learn a little more about my craft.
How is your business coping with the pandemic and how can people support you now?
Like other businesses, we have had significant loss in sales due to cancelled events, vendor partnerships, and our customers who would normally be working downtown and stopping in for a treat but are now working from home. We are now offering curbside order pick up which can be pre-ordered on our website www.twistcupcakerydayton.com. We are also taking custom cupcake and cake orders via email at twistcupcakerydayton@gmail.com. We are now shipping our cupcakes in a jar nationwide!
