The artwork created to serve as a memorial for the victims of the tragic events in the Oregon District on August 4, 2019, will be unveiled and dedicated this weekend. A public dedication and unveiling ceremony is planned from 3 to 4 p.m. this Sunday, August 4, 2024. The memorial is located in the plaza adjacent to 530 E. Fifth St. in the Oregon District. Local artists Terry Welker, FAIA, Sierra Leone, Jes McMillan, and James Pate were selected to create the memorial through a national Request for Qualifications process.

“This memorial was created to be a place for our community to grieve, heal, and ensure we never forget the nine lives we lost or any of those impacted by the events of August 4, 2019,” said Sandy Hunt, Co-Chair of the 8/4 Memorial Committee. “From the selection of the artist team to the installation of the memorial itself, it was of the utmost importance to have family of the victims, survivors, and members of the community involved in every step of the process.”

More information about the memorial is available at 8-4memorial.com.
