City leaders held a ribbon-cutting ceremony last week for downtown’s new temporary police substation. Located at 30 S. Main Street near the Greater Dayton RTA’s bus hub, the substation will house the Dayton Police Department’s Central Business District’s operations, including uniformed cruiser, bike, and walking patrols, as well as outreach for people experiencing homelessness and mental health episodes.

The temporary substation is expected to be used through January of 2029, with plans in the works for a permanent downtown police station to be built later. City officials told the Dayton Daily News that the temporary home for police force operations will help police respond quickly to needs in the Central Business District, which has seen considerable growth in the past decade.

“There has not been a downtown police station since 2012,” Dayton City Manager Shelley Dickstein told the DDN. “Since 2014, we have added thousands of residents, hundreds of millions of investment.”

U.S Representative Mike Turner echoed the need to protect downtown investment and the importance of the new substation, adding, “I think it’s going to have a huge impact to ensure people see increased police presence, which is going to directly translate to increased safety downtown for all the activities that are here.”
