Downtown has seen a flurry of new restaurants open in recent weeks, including several new ventures from long-time downtown favorite restaurateurs.
The team behind the popular Meadowlark and downtown’s Wheat Penny Oven & Bar have now opened Piccolo Orsetto at 521 Wayne Avenue. Open daily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., the restaurant offers breakfast, brunch, and lunch options in the Dietz Block building restored by Burgess and Jeanine Gow. In addition, Piccolo Orsetto will feature a cooking school, a private party room, and a cookbook library.
Another addition from a favorite downtown culinary team opened recently, as the owners of Grist, Patrick and Casey Van Voorhis, opened Resonant in the Oregon District. The fine-dining concept, located at 524 E. Fifth St. in the former Roost location, features a multi-course tasting menu as part of an elevated, immersive, choreographed dining experience. Offered as either a four-course prix-fixe or chef’s tasting menu, meals are also available with wine pairings and designed to feel like elegant and memorable experiences.
Across downtown, Deepika and Jay Singh, owners of Gulzar’s Indian Cuisine, have opened another concept next door. Located at 217 N. Patterson Blvd., The 8 provides a relaxed, sports-themed atmosphere and serves traditional American fare, such as wings, tacos, burgers, and sandwiches. Conveniently across the street from Day Air Ballpark, The 8 features an extended bar and several televisions aimed at attracting sports fans.
The original owners of downtown’s Corner Kitchen, Natalie and Jack Skilliter, announced they plan to open Whoa Dogs, an “Americana”-style restaurant serving such favorites as hot dogs, chili, and soft-serve ice cream. The restaurant is planned for the former Smokin’ BBQ site at the corner of Fifth Street and Patterson Boulevard in the Oregon District. Whoa Dogs is expected to open in late September.
Earlier this summer, Emporium Coffee and Souvenirs opened at 400 E. Fifth St. in the Oregon District, bringing a taste of Turkiye to downtown. The cafe features designs inspired by Turkish coffeehouses, and offers both classic coffee and tea options and Turkish specialties, including the use of the Kumda Kahve brewing process. Fresh pastries and desserts, along with “worldwide souvenirs” also are available.
